Ah, finally we get some meat on the bone.  If Open XML results in more efficient applications than ODF that is a good reason to use it.

However, comparing MS Office to OpenOffice in performance and from that saying that the formats dictate performance is a stretch.  I can easily imagine the Sun engineers blaming the format rather than their own code.

Admittedly, from a user perspective it doesn't matter what the cause is: the application is slow.
