Creative Commons Plug-in for Office

Today Microsoft and the Creative Commons jointly announced the availability of a plug-in for Office that allows Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, and Powerpoint slide decks to dynamically insert a CC license.

I've watched the Creative Commons for years and have had the pleasure of a number of interactions with Larry Lessig. I think the work they are doing is important and is helping people to really think through what the issues around copyright are. The are long-term implications of how ideas are shared given the balance between property rights enabling potential economic gain and the societal benefits of that same property. 

Given the reach of Microsoft Office, and the number of people creating works from those applications, I think this is a really good thing.
