A use for old motorcycle helmets?

Published 14 June 04 05:21 PM

Motorcycle helmets are pretty expensive, but they're cheaper than a new brain.  So, I've always used good helmets in good condition.

After crashing I have helmets that may not be safe to use.  So I sent them to Shoei to have them X-Rayed.  They use the latest in radiation technology to actually peer inside the helmet & see if it's structurally damaged.

The helmets came back with a note saying they were over 7 years old, and should be replaced.

Now what do I do with old helmets?  Is there anything more useful for them than propping up the next layer of trash in a landfill?

You could plant flowers in them. Or make it a part of moder-art instalation. Or sell on eBay. Or give to someone who would like to use it as bicycle helmet. Or put a computer into it ( http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/itxhelmet/ ). Or make it a home for hamster. Or mice.

Sorry I ran out of ideas :(

Ooh, I like the computer idea. I'd need to put some flashing lights behind the face screen, of course.

make sure the visor is sealed, and make a fish tank. put a light at the back, and the you can watch the fish through the visor.

A friend of mine did that with an iMac once. Worked better as a fish tank than as a computer *grin*
