Looking for small programming problems

Suppose I have some new crazy idea about development.  I'd like to try it out on a problem big enough to be interesting, but small enough to be doable in a short time.

Got any favorite small programming problems?

Parsing NMEA sentences complete with pattern matching based on specific sentances/data.

GPS stuff.

I just did this, uit was fun. Combined Serial comms (read only), with my standard mundane programming....
