I just checked out this video about Longhorn. I'm a Student Ambassador(SA) to Microsoft and an MVP. This video is great for use by the SA program next fall to get students hyped about Longhorn technologies and to show professors what will be possible. [I attended PDC and have been using those concepts and ideas but this video really brings it to life for professors and students] I'd love to get on board evangelising Longhorn to a greater extent from both an SA prespective and a MVP prespective. WOW, that was really amazing. I however would like to confirm the meaning of Concept Video, were those real apps or were they just a bunch of screens created to work for the presentation. I think it's going be a bit difficult for people to change their mindset in what they can, and are doing today and come up with such killer apps for the future, I guess it will take Microsoft to come out with a lot of such apps built into the OS which will give people more ideas. I can't even imagine how the Media Player, Image Viewer, MSN Messenger, Internet Explorer ... are going to look in Longhorn especially with Speech, biometrics, Avalon, WinFS, Indigo... WOW wish I had a fast forward button.

Very, véry nice interfaces, but those arrow and star buttons on each titlebar seem pretty useless to me.

Just reviewed the Uni campus demo application about longhorn... and wow i am impressed... But i cant help wounder how a lot of these application would look like in the non-glass mode... I am not complaining about the fact that Longhorn needs 3D hardware to do all the impressive avalon stuff, in fact i am all for it. Just currious as to how avalon will cope with rendering all the vector graphics as bitmaps and how close the user experience would be compared to the application run in glass mode...

Vaibhav - meaning of "concept video" is that it's not all implemented with real code. We'll be posting real-code prototypes soon; I too, wish we had a fast-forward button :)

That's really impressive. The only thing i ask me is: the difference between Longhorn applications (as we can see in your stunning concept videos) and todays real world applications is impressive light years different. That let me think this: or we think about todays application in a wrong way, or Longhorn will be support developers teams with Really New Tools that can divide the UI with the underlaying logic... yes you'll say me: hey there is XAML and a XAML-Designer-Tool... but are today's developers really READY for that? 3D graphics, new way to comunicate informations to users. Not static way (like today) but dinamicly and with high interaction and sharing...

Man i have troubles to find some developers that knows the concept of WebService...

My question are:

a) isn't all that (fantastic) longhorn stuff too ahead for the 99.995% of today and tomorrow developers?

b) the COST of developing a Longhorn application that will run ONLY on longhorn boxes, didn't in someway can stop to adopt it? I mean, i can modulize my application in .Net in the way i want, but if i design a GUI like the one of the concept video, i can run develope a "commercial" application that can run only on Longhorn... or I've to buy the 3D graphic Engine of HalfLife2... Don't you think that this will be a big trouble for the adoption of Longhorn? If the developers don't develop application for Longhorn people don't buy it, if people don't buy it then developers don't invest in it (.Net docet)...

c) where is the designer tool? i think that ms have to let see it to the world a lot of time BEFORE longhorn will be launched, IMHO.

It's not a critic but just few thoughts of a really LH enthusiast that hopes to see it on a lot (i would say every ;-)) desktop.

a) that's what they used to say about GUI development; we're working to make sure the platform isn't catering to 0.005% of developers :). For example, if you look at Indigo for Secure, Reliable, Transacted messaging over web services, that alone is taking 50,000 lines of code down to 10 lines of code.

b) having a Longhorn-optimized version of your app does require a Longhorn-specific branch in your code. But I think that cost will be outweighed significantly by the revenue opportunity of having an innovative, Longhorn-exploitive app.

c) I agree; it's coming...

Very impressive presentations. Looking to implement MapPoint web service current in .net 2003 right now.

I am very interested in how I can evangelize with MS products. I have used Oracle products mostly for 13 years, but with the latest releases of OS, db, and .NET, I think my focus has changed. Kudos to late nights of your developers. Every software company not collaborating with MS should be shaking in their boots.

There are a few of us out here, as you know, although I am truly a convert from Unix. First time on a "modern" Microsoft OS (95), someone removed the start button and I sat down at a PC with a bunch of clouds staring back at me, searching for a command line. Little did I know I would be learning the "3-finger salute" very shortly. Many BSODs later, and I am hooked. "Bet the company" has paid off.
