The Myth of Reuse in SOA
The industry has sold reuse with objects, with components, and now is selling it with services.
Here how I see this – SOA’s potential benefit is agility. Factor your services keeping in mind the business challenges and business opportunities – factor them in a way that sets you up to respond to the marketplace, the changes in your business, or at least as much as you can foresee – here is where business architecture plays a role.
Don’t factor services with reuse in mind – because a) you are not going to get it to the degree you think you are and b) you are going to optimize for the hypothetical versus focusing on delivering value to the business - but reuse as a side-effect is a good thing, enjoy it.
Of course there are always shared services – management, security, metering etc.
