Updates to Visual Studio UI

Jason Zander, the Visual Studio general manager, just posted a follow up to his post regarding the new look for VS2010.  Based on popular feedback, we’ve updated the look and feel of our outlining feature.  It’ll be available in our upcoming VSTS 2010 Beta 1 release and we hope you take a look and try them out.  If you do, please let us hear from you.

Why Visual Studio 2010 is not a Ribbon User Interface Design?

Ribbons are the modern way to help users find, understand, and use commands efficiently and directly—with a minimum number of clicks, with less need to resort to trial-and-error, and without having to refer to Help.

Compared to traditional menu bars and toolbars, ribbons always have an Application button and Quick Access Toolbar

The Ribbon had several advantages:

- menu items persist while you work

- physically navigating the options is MUCH easier than a standard menu system

- by "remembering" the last open ribbon, users innately set a preference of frequently used items

- Buttons are big, easy to hit and recognize

I hopefully Visual Studio 2010 will redesign to Ribbon User Interface similar to Office 2010 and Windows 7 Paint and Word pad.
