Well, here’s a couple of real-world uses of CCR (from from Tyco Software House and Siemens) Hosted in Microsoft data centers, Azure’s flexible and interoperable platform can help you build new applications to run from the cloud or to enhance existing applications with cloud-based capabilities. With open architecture, Azure gives developers the ability to build Web applications, and applications running on connected devices, PCs, servers, and hybrid solutions that offer the best of online and on-premises functionality. Confused about the Azure hype? Come discover and demystify the Azure concepts, and see demos of Azure in action with a variety of services.

SESSION 2 | Deepen your Debugging: Tips and Tricks for the Visual Studio 2008 Debugger

The Visual Studio debugger is a highly underutilized tool for many developers. In this session, you’ll learn how to use it like a pro, while picking up new techniques to fast-forward your problem solving and debugging abilities. We’ll show you how to use advanced breakpoints, advanced watch window / Expression evaluator tricks, modifiers, assertions on the fly, remote debugging, and more. Whether you’re writing C#, VB, WPF, ASP.NET, Windows Forms, or services, we’ll provide tips and tricks that will have you debugging faster and much more efficiently. The debugger is your primary tool for finding bugs, so join us and learn how to make the most of it.

SESSION 3 | Developing for Windows Mobile Devices

Mobile development is growing fast, and Windows Mobile is at the forefront with over 18 million phones shipped last year and many more cutting-edge devices on the way. Visual Studio developers have tremendous opportunities in this space. Why? Developing for a Windows Mobile phone leverages your existing coding experience and takes it to new heights. In this session, we’ll look at some of the coolest new devices, you’ll learn how to set up Visual Studio with the latest SDK and device emulators, and you’ll see how to build, deploy and debug Windows Mobile applications.

Thank You Syracuse – I’ll Be Back (March 5th)

Thanks to newly crowed MVP, Andy Beaulieu, for the invitation to speak on all things Services at the Central New York .NET Developer Group
I know, I know... don't quit my day job for a songwriting career, but if you were one of the nearly 500 people at the Sheraton Boston yesterday for the MSDN Developer Conference, you know what I'm talking about.

It was a great day of tech talks, keynotes, and community gathering around all of the recent technology announcements from Microsoft: Azure Services, Oslo, ASP.NET 4.0 and more, presented by some awesome speakers and industry experts like Richard Hale Shaw, Jesse Liberty, and Fritz Onion, to name just a few. It was great to be a part of it and have a chance to reconnect with a lot of folks I've met since joining Microsoft as well as quite a few from my days at Sybase.

I really don't see how it could have gone smoother, and that's due to the superb folks at the helm of the event, namely Chris Bowen, the Boston city lead, and Bob Familiar, who spearheaded all eleven MDC events across the country. Be sure to give them a quick pat-on-the-back and thank-you next time you see them!

Now on to New England Data Camp v1.0 It's hot of the presses, so unfortunately we weren't able to have the DVDs on hand. You'll also get a SWAG bag, including the ubiquitous Microsoft gel pen, 2 free Microsoft Press e-books on CD, and a few other surprises.

A lucky thirteen of the attendees will walk away with one of:

Four MSDN Subscriptions - Visual Studio System 2008 Team Suite with MSDN Premium Hot off the presses! Attendees at the MSDN Developer Conferences being held over the next couple months will each receive a DVD containing Windows 7 Beta 1. So not only will you be "among the first to see Windows 7", you'll be among the first to install and try out Windows 7!

This is so new, that we'll have to ship DVDs to those attending the early events in Orlando, Houston, and Atlanta after the fact, but they should be ready to hand out at the Boston and New York events in January.

Of course, there's a lot more going at at MDC - three tracks and twelve sessions on Windows Azure and cloud computing, the future of the Microsoft languages (Visual Basic, C#, and F#), the evolution of .NET 4.0 and VS 2010, and more.

Here's the registration links for our area, followed by the complete list of venues across the country. I'll be presenting in Boston, so look forward to seeing you there.

As promised I've recorded the Silverlight 2 session from this quarter's MSDN events. This is my inaugural effort at doing a screencast at Microsoft, and I just found out that I don't have all the accounts setup internally to post this quite yet. I've started that process, but in the meantime have uploaded the WMV file to my SkyDrive so you can get to it right away. Be warned: it's a hefty download (25 MB) and runs just about 30 minutes; I'll post a link to the streaming version as soon as it gets set up.

<img style="border-right: 0px; You're just a wee bit envious of all those who went to PDC to hear first-hand about the next-generation of computing on the Microsoft platform, namely Windows Azure and the Azure Services Platform, as well as updates to the .NET Framework, Windows 7, and a host of other goodies. While there's plenty of material to review - keynotes, Channel 9
This wraps up my set of three posts to follow up on questions asked during the MSDN events in Nashua and Stamford. Let me again invite you to send me an e-mail if there's something that came up during the sessions that I haven't addressed in my posts.

Is there an "express" version of Expression Blend?
Does Silverlight have a 'native' TreeView control?
Is there a framework for building Silverlight applications?
What media-encoding formats does Silverlight support?
How can I upload files through Silverlight?
How are those revolving picture displays (carousels) in WPF and Silverlight implemented?
Is there a Deep Zoom API?

Is there an "express" version of Expression Blend?

There isn't; however, there is a free 30-day trial available. Note too that Expression Blend (and Expression Web) are available with an MSDN Premium subscription. Programs such as Microsoft Empower for ISVs and DreamSpark are other avenues that you may be able to use toward procuring Microsoft design and development tools for reduced costs.

Does Silverlight have a 'native' TreeView control?

Not at this time; however, there is a CodePlex project that provides one. I also found implementations by VectorLight.Net, Telerik, and ComponentOne, and I suspect there will be others as well.

Is there a framework for building Silverlight applications?

The patterns and practices team at Microsoft recently released the Composite Application Guidance for WPF (formerly code-named Prism) that provides guidance on building scalable and testable applications with WPF. That body of work is being extended to support Silverlight as well, and an initial drop of "Prism 2.0" is available. The contrib project on CodePlex for Composite WPF guidance also includes a "Prism to Silverlight" offering. You might also want to check into Ninject, which provides dependency injection support for Silverlight.

What media-encoding formats does Silverlight support?

One of the 'eye-chart' slides in the presentation lists the following: VC-1, WMA, and MP3. In September, Microsoft announced we would also be supporting MPEG-4 (namely, H.264 for video and AAC for audio) in a forthcoming release of Silverlight. As I mentioned in the talk, Microsoft Expression Encoder is also available and can re-encode over two dozen audio, video, and image formats.

How can I upload files through Silverlight?

The Silverlight site has a great video by Tim Heuer on just this topic. There's also a sample project on the Microsoft Silverlight Gallery that provides for multi-file uploads.

How are those revolving picture displays (carousels) in WPF and Silverlight implemented?

There's a video (with code) on the Silverlight site you may want to review. I also found a couple of references to implementations from others that you may be able to leverage in part or in whole:

ElementFlow is a part of a CodePlex project called FluidKit. This is the work of Pavan Podila; you can read his blog entry on ElementFlow.
Microsoft's North Face In-Store Explorer Proof-of-Concept includes some details on the carousel implementation done there.

Infragistics, Telerik, and ComponentOne (to name a few) also have a carousel control you can purchase if you don't want to roll your own.

Is there a Deep Zoom API?

Deep Zoom is the technology I demonstrated that provides for the great user experience in the Hard Rock Cafe memorabilia site. Deep Zoom Composer provides an interface into building the MultiScaleImage that provides the experience, but the question refers to whether there is an API that would allow programmatically constructing the image from a series of other images. Here is a Silverlight forum post that provides an option - by wrapping a command line utility called
SparseImageTool.exe
that ships with Deep Zoom; PhotoZoom is apparently built with this technique.

MSDN Follow-up: Visual Studio Tools for Office

First things first.... you can download the content from my SkyDrive below.
<iframe style="border-right: #dde5e9 1px solid;
Next, let's address the unanswered questions I recall from the sessions. Again, if I missed your question, just shoot me a quick e-mail.

Where can I download the prerequisites for VSTO applications?
How can I interface Excel with an cube from SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)?

Where can I download the prerequisites for VSTO applications?

As we discussed, there are three prerequisites for running VSTO applications on the client machine. If you are using Visual Studio 2008 SP1, all three are bootstrapped automatically when you deploy via the Publish (Click-Once) option. Prior to SP1, you had to get the Primary Interop Assemblies (PIAs) for the appropriate version of Office as an extra step. See Mary Lee's blog post if you want to add this as a prerequisite, and you haven't yet installed SP1.

Here are links to the individual downloads. Note, there are service packs to .NET 3.5 and VSTO 3.0 that must be in concert:

.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 OR
.NET Framework Client Profile Offline Installer

Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office system (version 3.0 Runtime) Service Pack 1

2007 Microsoft Office System Update: Redistributable Primary Interop Assemblies AND/OR
Office 2003 Update: Redistributable Primary Interop Assemblies

How can I use VSTO to interface Excel with an cube from SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)?

First, a disclaimer! SSAS is not an area with which I have much familiarity; however, I did find a few resources that seem to be relevant. If you know of others, or find the following links are way out in left field, please let me know.

OLAP Pivot Table Extensions for Excel (on CodePlex) - an Excel add-in built with VSTO 2005. Since CodePlex is an open-source site, you'd be able to adapt what is here to your needs.

ADOMD.NET - this seems like a good lead, providing a data provider for SSAS that you could, of course, leverage with VSTO.

Article on accessing data from an OLAP server with Excel - this article is pretty dated (it used SQL Analysis Server 2000), but the content may remain relevant.
