First four chapters of "TCP/IP Fundamentals for Microsoft Windows" online book published

The first four chapters of the "TCP/IP Fundamentals for Microsoft Windows" online book have been published on TechNet. These chapters are the first four of 18 chapters and 4 appendices that describe the fundamental concepts of TCP/IP (IP version 4) and IPv6 and its support in current versions of Microsoft Windows (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003).

This online book is intended for information technology students who are ramping up on TCP/IP and related technologies in Windows so that they can better understand how TCP/IP works and how to troubleshoot problems.  If you were around when there was a "TCP/IP for Windows NT" certification exam, this online book is an attempt to update the information in that MCSE course book for current versions of Windows. Note that this content does not include information about TCP/IP planning, configuration, deployment, and management, or application development.

The first four chapters are the following:

Chapter 1: Introduction to TCP/IP

Introduces TCP/IP, both as an industry-standard protocol suite and as it is supported in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

Chapter 2: Architectural Overview of the TCP/IP Protocol Suite

Examines the TCP/IP protocol suite in greater detail, analyzes its four layers and the core protocols used within each layer, and discusses the two main application programming interfaces (APIs) that networking applications for the Windows operating systems use and the APIs’ naming schemes.

Chapter 3: Addressing

Describes the types of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, how they are expressed, and the different types of unicast addresses assigned to network node interfaces.

Chapter 4: Subnetting

Describes subnetting concepts and procedures for both IPv4 and IPv6 address prefixes to efficiently allocate and administer the unicast address spaces assigned and used on private intranets.

New chapters will be posted when they are ready and I will mention them in this blog.

I am very interested in getting your feedback on this new resource for understanding TCP/IP. The goal is to create a definitive resource for TCP/IP fundamentals to prepare blossoming IT professionals for current and future versions of Windows. Please let me know by providing feedback on this post or through the individual chapter pages. Thanks in advance.
