Upgrading WSS v3 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 beta 2 pilot environments to RTM (What's supported!)

This is an upgrade message directly from the product team in relation only to those that have deployed beta 2 bits and wish to upgrade to RTM

Key: B2 = Beta 2, B2TR = Beta 2 Technical Refresh, RTM = Release to Manufacturer (our final bits)

Customers who wish to upgrade pilot environments to RTM must upgrade to B2TR.

We will not be supporting direct upgrade from beta2 to RTM.  The only upgrade path is Beta2->B2TR->RTM

Earlier localization plans excluded B2TR releases of some of the server products.  Rather than leave users unable to upgrade their pilot programs, we broadened our support matrix.  This change allows us to focus test resources on deeper testing of upgrade.

By request from support, we will need to keep the B2TR bits available for download after RTM is available, to ensure customers will be able to upgrade from their b2 pilot installs.  The location and time this will be available is TBD.

The rest of the upgrade plan is unchanged.
• B2TR is going to be released as a patch, for full SKUs and for the language packs.
• Upgrading to RTM will require users to modify a registry key, uninstall B2TR, and then install RTM.  This will be documented in B2TR and RTM.

Additional Details:

Ø  How does the user deploy B2TR and use that to upgrade, if they haven’t already deployed beta2?  Install the beta2 bits, then install the b2tr bits, then proceed with upgrade.

Ø  Do users have to update registry keys to upgrade to B2TR?  No, that’s an RTM thing only.

Ø  What is the impact on the Search SKU?  It is releasing for the first time at B2TR, as a full install.  No need to apply a patch for that at B2TR.  Upgrade to RTM will be the same as it is for the other products.

More details in the setup guides and readme's of B2TR and RTM.

# re: Upgrading WSS v3 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 beta 2 pilot environments to RTM (What's supported!)

Can I find any exhaustive information about the topic you have started in this blog? Any website, articles, whitepapers?

I want to know more about the intsallation and features of Office SharePoint Server 2007 and why is it called "Office" SharePoint Server 2007. Don't we have anything like WSS 2007 like WSS 2003 or WSS v3? Please clear my doubts and correct me.

I would also love to know more about:

1. B2TR = Beta 2 Technical Refresh

2. RTM = Release to Manufacturer

3. Detailed features (including extra) of
  SharePoint Server 2007

4. Difference between SharePoint Server 2007
and WSS 2003 and Portal Server 2003

Hope, I am asking more but I want to educate myself about the topics I have mentioned.

I would like to know whether Microsoft has released localized version of SPS 2007 (Spanish, Japanese, etc.)

Yes, they have posted many languages, many more than Japanese and Spanish.  See the SharePoint blog for more info... http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint
