Step by Step Instructions for Publishing from Access 2007 to a SharePoint Site

This is so cool, I had to share it.  This was in a hands on lab to show some of the cool integration and new features in the new 2007 Microsoft Office system.  On one hand, imagine how cool it would be to get all those MDB files that have been having a hard time finding a home finally finding a real place to live that's easy for end users.  Then consider the power in Access 2007 and those Access guys can still use their tool, but publish or sync the data to a place that's both rich, monitored and backed up.

Web sites based on Windows SharePoint Services provide a place where your team can communicate, share documents, and work together on a project. With Office Access 2007, you can publish your Access 2007 files to libraries, or move the application to Windows SharePoint Services, allowing your team to interact with it easily through the browser. Forms, reports, and information can be viewed, updated, or deleted directly on the Windows SharePoint Services site according to the established permission settings.

·    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click Microsoft Office Access 2007 (Beta).

·    In the Getting Started with Microsoft Office Access page, under Template Categories, click Sample, click Northwind 2007, and click Create.

·    In the Login Dialog dialog box, click Login.

·    In Microsoft Access, on the External Data menu, click Move to SharePoint.

·    In the Move to SharePoint Site wizard, in the What SharePoint site do you want to use? box, type [URL to your SharePoint Server 2007 or WSSv3 site] example: http://moss/sites/sales, clear Save a copy of my databases… check box and click Next.

·    Note: This will take a few minutes to complete.

·    In the Move to SharePoint Site wizard, select Show Details check box, review the message and click Finish.

·    Note: To view the log file In Microsoft Access, expand Navigation Pane, click Unassigned Objects and double click Move to SharePoint Site Issues.

·    Close Microsoft Access 2007.

Wasn't that cool?

·    Maximize Internet Explorer.

·    From the [Your Site] example Fabrikam Sales Team site, in the Quick Launch bar, click Lists.

·    In the All Site Content web page, click Customers.

·    In the Customers web page, click Actions and click Connect to Outlook. Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is launched.

·    In the Microsoft Office Outlook dialog box, click Yes.

·    In the Fabrikam Sales Team – Customers view, double click on Elizabeth Andersen.

·    In the Elizabeth Andersen – Contact window, change the Company to ACME Co. and the Business Phone Number to (425) 555-5555.

·    In the Location Information dialog box, in the What area code… box, type 425 and click OK.

·    In the Phone and Modem Options dialog box, click OK.

·    In the Elizabeth Andersen – Contact window, click Save and Close.

·    Close Outlook 2007 and switch back to Internet Explorer.

·    In the Customers web page, press F5 to refresh the web page.

·    Notice that Elizabeth Andersen has the new information listed.
