Problem Opening SharePoint Server Alert in Outlook 2007

This KB article title is a bit of a misnomer, but once you dig info this you'll see it's not just the fact that your mail is from exchange, but more related to a  MIME to MAPI conversion problem.  This KB relates to properties which begin with X- (it's something that Microsoft IT uses when they retire or replace something).  If you're experiencing this issue it may related to MIME to MAPI conversion issues.

This problem occurs because Exchange 2003 cannot convert the MIME-type properties to MAPI-type properties correctly if the names of the properties begin with X-.

You cannot open a SharePoint Server 2007 notification message in Outlook 2007 when your mailbox is on an Exchange 2003 server

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930807/en-us

The hotfix is available via customer support.  The hotfix applies to Exchange Server 2003 and has to be applied after it has been upgraded to SP2.

Thanks for the tip!  I've been having this exact issue.

Here's a quick workaround: reply to the message, and the email will appear (at least in my situation).

Is this alert issue related to why I can't open a task from a work-flow in Outlook 2007? I get the following error message:

The URL xxxxxxxxxxxx.xml is an unsupported relative URL. Use an absolute URL or prefix with '~sitecollection', for a site-collection-relative URL.

We are using Exchange 2000 if it matters.

Brian,  my guess since I've never seen your error before is your web app may have been extended with localhost or with a blank header value.  Either way, it appears that the email doesn't know how to connect to the SharePoint web service.  You may want to look at specifying an alternate access mapping if this is something you can control or manage.  This may be a symptom of a larger problem.

I am having the exact same issue that Brian Merrifield is having. Specifically related to the built in 'Approval' workflow. The URL being passed is http://site/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XmlLocation=list/docname.xml, where site is the name of the server and port, and list is the list name, and docname is the title of the document to open.

I have the same error with Infopath forms and using the (builtin) approval workflow. I'm guessing this has something to do with an Infopath form that is published in Central Administration and is openend from Outlook instead of modified taskitem in Sharepoint itself.

Because when you open the taskitem it does not need to know the absolute path (the taskitem is on the site as the form) and a relative path is sufficient.

I'm also encountering Brian's issue...what's the solution? Thanks!

Brian and Tom, I believe alternate access mappings would help you out in your case.

Check out Troy Starr's post on alternate access mappings.

Brian and Tom, I believe alternate access mappings would help you out in your case.  Create a default mapping and/or intranet mapping that is your URL.  This should help or correct the issue.

Check out Troy Starr's post on alternate access mappings.

Could this problem also apply to Windows Sharepoint Services?  Our problem is with Discussions and Documents email alerts, not Announcements and Tasks email alerts (these open just fine).  When an alert is sent out for Documents or Discussions, however, you cannot open the email.  I believe it gives some sort of 'unknown error'

# re: Problem Opening SharePoint Server Alert in Outlook 2007

I am getting the same error as Tom and Robin.

It is not alternate access mappings. We already have an alternate access mapping to our URL.

I am using a subsite as in http://server/subsite/Library and the correct URL is

http://site/subsite/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XmlLocation=subsite/list/docname.xml,

whereas it is trying to send me to

http://site/subsite/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XmlLocation=list/docname.xml,

The generated automatic e-mail URL is simply the wrong path. If there was a way for me to edit the email that is generated, I could fix it. But I cannot find it. Very frustrating.

I am also getting the same error... alternate access mapping didn't fix the issue.  the path is simply wrong, but there is no way to correct it.  At least I haven't found a way as of yet.

i am having the exactly same error message as in brain's post, it was all perfect before i enabled target audience feature of this workflow enabled form library. i guess it is probably related to the 'target audience'

feature? but the problem is still there even after i turned off the 'target audience'

any help?
