SharePoint Screen Casts and Demos

I know that it's always easier to see someone do something once to learn it.  Especially if you have to see it to believe it like the Missourians or the type that will commit the UI to memory once you see where it goes.

I'm a believer in the concept of having a user focused FAQ and SharePoint "Service" site where people can go to find information on the farm, common FAQs, CBTs, and screencasts.  These links all contain free screencasts/demos of doing common and advanced site administrator, server administrator, or developer tasks.  These are great collateral for the type of info you'd want to make available on your "service" site as end user/site administrator training.  As well, these would make excellent links in your "resources" web part in your central admin.  Think about that one for a sec, now go and add the links...  Open central admin and add your favorites from the links below, it's not hard and you'll be glad you did.

Bob Fox one of the SharePoint MVPs recently included some screencasts on his blog.  Watch for other screencasts coming down road.  He's listened to me, I bet he would listen to you if you had suggestions for him.

You may already know that screencasts are out there.  Came across Asif's (MCT) site http://sharepoint-screencasts.com (what a novel domain name!) nicely categorized as using a SharePoint site to post them.  The list below is a snapshot of his list as of this posting...

Experience Level : 1_Beginner ‎(8)

·         Creating a SharePoint Site

·         Adding Users to a Site

·         Creating Lists in Sites

·         Adding Web Parts to a Site

·         Adding Columns and Data to a Custom List

·         Using a Picture Library and Image Web Part together

·         Subscribing to Library or List RSS Feeds

·         Using the Recycle Bin

Experience Level : 2_Intermediate ‎(8)

·         Understanding and Using Site Columns

·         Enhanced Survey Functionality

·         Exploring built-in MOSS Workflows

·         Creating Powerful Workflows using SharePoint Designer 2007

·         Content Management Using Data View Web Part

·         Understanding and using the new Features concept

·         Creating and using Blog sites in SharePoint

·         Use Wikis in SharePoint to Whiteboard your thoughts

 Experience Level : 3_Advanced ‎(1)

·         Importing Profiles from Active Directory into SharePoint

Of course don’t miss Ted Pattison's Developer Screencasts (20+) on MSDN.  Don't dismiss these as the set that were there during the betas.  *Wow* there are some awesome new ones.  Good stuff on page layouts, content types, the DIP (document information panel), ribon, wikis, blogs, etc... (you'll see lots of posts pointing at these babies)

Then check out these "Demos" from Office.microsoft.com.  Most of these could be seen as IW, but really they are not the basics.  You could consider these as advanced Site Administrator tasks well coordinated with the server/farm administrator (IT Pro).

Demo: Configure a SharePoint Server 2007 site to receive e-mail

Demo: Deploy an administrator-approved form template

Demo: Add a library to a Records Center site

Demo: Enable Excel Services and data connections for a SharePoint team site

Check out MOM 2007, where links to MSFT screencasts are baked into the admin gui right outta the box. Of course the content has to be in place to start with, but this is excellent. The links are task based dependant upon where u are in the console.
