Posting from Down Unda at the APAC SharePoint Conference 2007
Hey mate, I'm sitting here in the speaker lounge at the SharePoint Conference Sydney. I'm in the land of OZ. Kicking it down unda. I hope to pet a Koala some time during the week. I also have a car and plan to head to the Blue Mountains and track down a wallaby or Kangaroo. Did you know they have Penguins in Austrailia?
If you're here, I hope you stop by and say hi. Here's my speaking session list:
- Securing SharePoint Technology - May 15, 11:00AM, Level 2, Room 2 - I'm covering this in 3 portions, Site level security, Web App Security, Farm level security - I'll be doing demos at each of the 3 levels
- Capacity and Performance Planning - May 15, 2:25PM, Level 2, Room 2 - This will focus primarly on capacity boundaries and sizing, but will consider the different architectural elements with an emphasis on planning with some focus on optimization
- Disaster Recovery for SharePoint Technologies - May 15, 4:10PM, Level 2, Room 2 - This is broken down into granular recovery - backup/restore features, high availability options, and disaster recovery options, then lists partner solutions
- Planning, Upgrading, and Migrating to New SharePoint Products and Technologies - 16 May, 11:00AM, Level 2, Room 2 - This breaks down the 3 upgrade methods, discusses what to do before hand, detailed info on prescan, and emphasis on handling customizations. My demo is being done by one of the OBS guys. They just released their site on MOSS.
I'm on a panel one evening, and presenting with Mike Fitzmaurice at the Sydney SharePoint User group. As well I have a number of side meetings, Angus Logan has done his job well of keeping me busy, maybe too well? If you're in one of the side meetings I look forward to meeting you. At least one of the meetings I have is focused on governance. It's always nice to hear what customers are doing and find out what challenges they are dealing with.
I've already ran into the Echo Technology folks. They have some pretty cool stuff that will help out in the management of customizations through a multi step approach including analysis, testing, and in rolling out changes including content types, features, etc... If you are here, you have to stop by. They've got a working alpha that will knock your socks off. They also demo a "SharePoint Spy" a tool they've designed shows you the guts. One they suggested is one they'll share for free in the next few weeks. You can see configurations, Sergei is doing a talk here on site definitions that I plan to attend.
Another vendor nSynergy demoed a tool that allows you to drag and drop emails into folders to your SharePoint sites. The UI build totally in Outlook 2007 allows you to manage your content in Outlook. They're mapping to content types and rich Outlook integration in a familar app was impressive. Imagine using Outlook rules to save emails into SharePoint lists. The scenarios are build around document and email management on SharePoint lists.
Quest software is giving away an XBOX 360 and appears to be very focused on their workplace architects aquisition solutions (great demos) as well as their migration functionality (from public folders, file shares, and Notes... They are surveying to find out what other platforms you want to migrate from... EMC/Documentum, FileNet and other document management platforms.
On my trip over I was on the same plane as Andrew Connell. We had a good chat. He spent a 9 hour layover in LA. The airport was awful. My connection from Seattle to LA was delayed an hour and I had to run from one terminal another across a parking lot. There was no option to go from one terminal to the next without leaving the building and having to go back through security. Pathetic. I was exhausted when I got there. The airport was pretty dingy and the resteraunts were lacking in viable options. Burger king doesn't cut it.
When we arrived, I rented a car and gave a ride to AC and his wife. We then settled at the Hilton in downtown Sydney and went out to lunch on a place overlooking Darling Harbor. The lamb cous cous salad was great. Good times!
