SharePoint FAQ on DST and October 9th Public Update

I've gotten some questions asked on the hotfix and public update I wanted to address here.  Product Support and a few PFEs helped me with these.  Thanks guys!

Q. Do I need to install both the MOSS and WSS public updates?

A. Yes, best practice would be to install WSS 3.0 first then MOSS 2007.

Q. If I have to choose between the public update (Oct 9) and the DST patch which should I install?

A. The public update includes the DST and we recommend you install that.

Q. What if I don't want to install the public update?

A. You should at minimum install the WSS DST patch on your WSS and MOSS Servers.

Q. What will happen if I don't do anything.

A. On October 28th your timer jobs will be off by 1 hour and without the public update the cross site scripting vulnerability will be present amongst other less important fixes.

Q. Do I need to install the update on all my servers? and Do I need to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard on every server?”.

A. The answer to both is Yes.  The configuration wizard may not launch, but this is still a key required step.

Q. I just installed a new MOSS Server today.  What should I install?

A. Install the MOSS RTM, then install the Oct 9 Public Update for WSS, then MOSS and follow the instructions.  Then I'd recommend running windows update to get the latest public .NET hotfixes.

Q. Do I need to care about the DST patch if I'm in GMT?

A. No, if you're daylight savings time doesn't change on Oct 28, then you don't need it.

Q. What if I get an error?

A. Most common ones can be corrected by doing the forced upgrade of the databases and binaries after a reboot.

psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b –wait –force

Bill Baer addresses a couple of common errors and how to increase the timeout values: KB934525 Troubleshooting "Cannot start service SPAdmin on computer '.'."

Q. Do I need to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard after the WSS patch, then again after the MOSS patch, or can I install both patches, then run psconfigui afterward only once?”

A. You can install both the WSS and MOSS updates and then run the configuration wizard once.

Q. Are there any troubleshooting steps for the public update?

A. Yes... Check out these recently published posts which will eventually be incorporated into KBs:

  • How can you tell if it worked other than seeing success in the log?  Version numbers what you'll see...
  •

    Q. What if I don't care about the scripting vulnerability and I'm not in the time zones affected and it's on my Intranet?

    A.  It is a security vulnerability, we're not going tell you its safe, so it's your choice and we understand that if you want to wait for SP1.

    Q. Where can I get these?

    A. Here's a link to the recent blog announcement for Daylight Savings Time Fixes for WSS 3.0 and WSS 2.0 (Which are applicable for MOSS and SPS 2003 environments).

Windows SharePoint Services Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: See Knowledge Base article 934525.

    # re: SharePoint FAQ on DST and October 9th Public Update

    Joel --

Can you provide any insight as to why the DST patches always seem to be released so near the time when the time change occurs? I realize that DST has global implications that need to be considered, but it seems like the information about these changes have been out there for a while (ex: in the US, the Energy Policy Act was signed in July of 2005).

Its just frustrating b/c as administrators we get so little lead time to deploy these patches, which can have a definite impact on our SharePoint farms. My main client has a very aggressive approach to deploying patches, and even there we're going to be pressed to deploy and test these patches to all our environments.

I had hoped that after how poorly the spring DST updates went (we definitely got those at the last minute and had to do some serious massaging to get them to work) we wouldn't need  to put ourselves through that again. But it still concerns me that these patches are coming out with less than a month of lead time.

Of course, this is just my perspective, so I may be off base. If so, I apologize.

    Thanks,

    John F.

    Hi Joel,

I had a mix OS farm environment, the SQL server, and three other servers are running windows 2003 x64 bit, the fifth one is running windows 2003 32 bit.  This server serves as an indexing server.  Do I have to apply both updates x64 version and 32 bit version on this farm?  - Thanks for your help

In relation to 32 bit vs. 64 bit.  You should install 32 bit on 32 bit SharePoint software servers and 64 bit on 64 bit SharePoint software servers.

Do you need to update the servers in a complex MOSS farm in any particular order (the server hosting CA first, then rest of App servers, then WFE's?) or does it not matter which server you update first?

    Thanks!

Joel, my apologies if this is a really stupid question (rookie), but is there a way to find out if the patches installed correctly?  Looking through Add/Remove programs on the server does not show the KB's after the install.

    Hi Joel,

We are having no luck installing the updates as we are getting the following error: “The expected version is not found in the system”. The version of SharePoint we have running is 12.0.0.4518.

Do we need install any other fixes before we install the latest one to get the versions up-to-date? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    # re: SharePoint FAQ on DST and October 9th Public Update

Did you upgrade from B2TR?  Or did you install a hotfix that might not have finished it's install?  Install has 2 big pieces, binary and database upgrade.  If either doesn't finish you can get an inconsistent experience.

If you are getting "The expected version is not found in the system,” then you should make sure both the databases and the binaries are updated by running:

psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force

I'm having the same problem as Emon.  I'm running 12.0.4518.1015 on 2003 x86 SP2 with SQL 2005 SP2 back end.  It was installed fresh from the final version.  I tried the psconfig command as well with no luck.
