Options, Options Everywhere (part 2)

Seems like a lot of people are interested in the Visual Studio options post I made! If I had to summarize the feedback I'd say that most people:

  • Want better management of options. VS needs to provide better categorization of the current options and then allow users to intelligently filter them to find the one appropriate one (i.e. attempt to address the “I know there must be an option that does this somewhere“ problem).
  • Want to be able to move their settings between installations of VS. We have a new feature in Whidbey called “VS Settings“ that provide some functionality in this area - I'll post some more information on what this feature will do in another post.
  • Want more information on both what and why that option even exists. VS needs to provide better descriptions on what the option actually does and most importantly why that option even exists - what's the scenario when that option is important.

I'll work with our doc teams to figure out how we can make the “why“ information available in Whidbey, but it's never too late to start so I'll start to gather information on “why” question for the VS 2003 options. Let's discover together why all those options are there!

You can't _make_ people read docs. What you need to find out is a way to 'push' that information.
There are some really cool features in most of Microsoft's products, but they are forgotten because nobody uses them. This is usually caused by the fact that people don't know about them.
For instance, I just recently learned that you can hit [Ctrl + Numpad Plus] to autoresize columns in lists in Windows. Who knew?
