Musings of a Microsoft Technologist with an environmental bent.....

About Joe's Blog

Originally Australian, I currently work as a Technology Strategist for Microsoft UK in the Communications Sector. I have an extensive background in the telco sector with experience in Customer Care and End User Technology. I currently lead Innovation and Sustainability workstream in BT and am also a Microsoft Environmental Sustainability Ambassador in UK participating in external forums (Forum for the Future, Aldersgate Group, Green Mondays, 2Degrees Network) and core member of Microsoft UK Environmental vteam (see Microsoft Environmental Portal).

Besides applying technology to solve business problems, I am passionate about the environment and how we can apply technology to transition to a low carbon economy and postively impact our world. I am very much a believer that what makes sense environmentally will also make sense commercially. These concepts do not need to be mutually exclusive.

My personal philosophy is that we need to create sustainable cities by promoting resillience and self sufficiency at the local level whilst remaining globally connected. Think Glocalisation or bioregionalism. Keeping the means of production whether it be energy, manufacturing, food, or services local helps to address not only environmental impacts but wellbeing and local economies. ICT is a key enabler together with a change in thinking to embrace systems thinking which takes into consideration the total lifecycle of product and services.

As is the blogging custom this blog expresses my opinions and ponderings which may or may not reflect my employers and are subject to change or fossilise with the passing of time.
