Power In, Dollars Out: How to Stem the Flow in the Data Center

computerServers.jpgPower efficiency of Windows Server is a hot topic at the moment. Our Windows Server Performance Product Manager released a technical white paper explaining how IT administrators and Data Center managers can improve power efficiency and reduce power related costs in their data centers.  The document contains guidance for optimizing power consumption of the Windows Server OS. This guidance has been developed during the work to date on Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 7 (Windows Server 2008 R2).  This work will continue and the team will periodically update the doc. It can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pnppwr/powermgmt/Svr_Pwr_ITAdmin.mspx

The team has also put together a blog post covering one of the “best practices” topics in the doc – how to tune the processor performance settings for increased power efficiency. This blog post is on our public blog (Windows Server Performance Team) http://blogs.technet.com/winserverperformance/.

I read this paper in some detail...its very good - thanks for the reference. It should be more widely circulated because there are some insights in there that are not widely understood even by those who are tasked with spreading the word about eco-efficient IT practices.
