Take care copying commands from emails

Windows isn't always WYSIWYG and sometimes it will pretend. I'm talking here about how different characters are displayed on the screen to make the layout look nice. If you are typing away in Word then you can sometimes spot hyphens, for example, being

Monitoring empty queues in MSMQ

One common misconception is that because a queue exists in Computer Management you should be able to monitor it. From the MSMQ FAQ (link on the left): 5.10 .... And why is it that I cannot see all my queues in System Monitor? ... a queue is only monitored

Clearing up MSMQ certificates from Active Directory

Some people have found a problem where Active Directory contains too many MSMQ certificates for a particular user account, usually if that's the one they use for installing all their MSMQ machines. As you know, MSMQ uses certificates for authentication

There's a new KB article out (although the hotfix was produced last year): FIX: The Lsass.exe process may use a high percentage of CPU resources when you run Message Queuing on a domain controller with global catalog The following is taken from the KB:

MSMQ is asynchronous on the inside too

There is a new Knowledgebase article out - although I use the term "new" with some reservation. The article refers to a hotfix that has since been included in service pack 2 which gives you an idea how old the content really is. FIX: Message Queuing 3.0

Installing MSMQ can be a SELF-ish act

There's one thing with the documentation/help for installing MSMQ that confuses me - it talks about the Active Directory permissions required for the logged in account but I've noticed setup doesn't really care. For an independent client at least, all

Getting MSMQ messages out of Windows Server 2008 remotely

I'm now into full swing looking at MSMQ 4.0 on Windows Server 2008 using Virtual Server. I haven't got round to installing 2008 on my 64-bit laptop and desktop yet but maybe in the summer sometime when customers are on vacation I'll have the time. Sending

Latest version (1.5) of the logging script for MSMQ 3.0

Microsoft PSS might ask you to change the logging level of MSMQ (in Windows XP, 2003) when helping you troubleshoot a support case. The script for this is in the appendix of the MSMQ FAQ but sometimes copy/pasting the lines to a text file generates formatting

MSMQ Diagnostics "Send test messages" and "Tracking" are greyed out

So you want to test out the routing of MSMQ messages through your enterprise? Sounds simple enough - go to the Properties of the machine to be tested and choose the Diagnostics tab. Strange, the options to send test messages and track routing are greyed

An Unattended Setup of MSMQ on Windows XP fails if the source path is 100 characters long.

Here's a bug that doesn't seem to have a KnowledgeBase article for it (I'll see if I can get that fixed [[Edit - No, I can't]] ). When you want to install MSMQ on Windows XP automatically then you use a command line something like this: Sysocmgr.exe /i:{full

MSMQ 4.0 runs with the Network Service account instead of Local System

The changes in security between Windows XP and Windows Vista have thrown up one or two problems for MSMQ. Take this one: You cannot send or receive encrypted Message Queuing messages after you upgrade a computer from Windows XP to Windows Vista The move

Uninstalling service pack 1 for Vista breaks MSMQ

Looks like testing of SP1 may not have been as thorough as it could have been. Basically uninstalling the Vista service pack deletes one of the key internal queues that MSMQ uses and you will need to manually recreate it. The Message Queueing service

MSMQ likes drive letters

May seems to be MSMQ KB article month and there's still another half-dozen in the pipeline. This one is so tiny I might as well include all of it in this post: A clustered storage resource that does not have a drive letter may not be compatible with a
