Tales from the Smart Client

John Gossman's observations on Avalon development

XML for Naval Missiles

Whit Kemmey from the DOD is a very humorous presenter.  His problem domain is extreme: describe "Standard Operating Procedures" for controlling nuclear missiles on submarines.  On old hardware.  Operated by 19-year olds.  Underwater.

But his sly asides make the talk:

"We use string tables for when we translate into Russian..."

"Our software has never been used for the purpose for which it is designed..."

"Here's some more cool submarine pictures..."

"I'm not a vendor, this stuff is not for sale..."

Impressive.  As Chris Sells said:  given that there is software running nuclear missile systems, Whit is the kind of guy you want working on it.
