Monitoring the discussion groups

Someone asked me where I get some of the ideas for the powertoys I create. Mostly, I steal the ideas from Dan Escapa J, but I also check out our discussion group at http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?lang=en&cr=US&dg=microsoft.public.onenote frequently.

This is exactly where I saw the request for a bulk text file importer and wrote my addin for that process.

Not to tip my hand, but I saw this question:

" I am searching for a way to print a summary of my pages. Something where only
the Titles are listed (and not the actual content of each page) . I have been
searching for this and can not find any way to do it. "

Well, one of the testers I work with is polishing her solution even as I type this. She gave me permission to mention it publicly, and she should be done soon. I just wanted to point out this discussion group as one more place to get tips and help with OneNote, and give an example or two that we read and respond to comments there.

But as always, feel free to respond directly to me.

# Ideas for PowerToys? at OneNote PowerToys

# re: Monitoring the discussion groups

Hi. What I would like to see is a tool that lets you send the document to OneNote from INSIDE the office apps (Word, excel, powerpoint). It would be just like the "Send to Onenote" tool in explorer except that you could do it from inside the app, while you are viewing the document.

So many times when viewing/reviewing a document I think to myself (hey, this belongs to this project I have in OneNote). Today I have to go all the way to the folder of that document to send it to OneNote. It would be so much easier to do it while you are looking at it.

This shouldn't be too difficult...its pretty much the "Send to OneNote" tool in a different location...

Please, someone, make it happen!!! :-)

Can you use the Print to OneNote printer driver?

In OneNote, click File | Print and select Print to OneNote.  This may help.

Sadly, it does not work on 64 bit Windows, though.

Hi John,

Yep - that's a great functionality, and I use it a lot.

But sometimes I just want to insert link to the document or embed the document into OneNote :-)

Hi Thomas,

Do you mean the equivalent of performing a "Select All" on the contents of the document and then pasting the results in OneNote (assuming formatting and the like remains intact)?

This sounds easy, but then I think about the landscape format of slides, the document format of Word and the table setup of Excel.  Then it starts to get very complicated very quickly.

Hi John,

No, I was more thinking of inserting a link to the document or embed the document itself into OneNote.

Kind of like Daniel Escapa’s "sendToOne powertoy", or Jeremy Lewi’s "SendTo OneNote PowerToy"

BUT from INSIDE the office application. :-)

That would be great!
