Blog of "The" Office Developer

What do you want?

I was sitting here planning the Web site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/office) getting things in place, pushing developer content while I mess around with Windows Media Encoder on the side.

My questions: What changes do you want on the site? What content would you like to see? What features do you want? What bugs you?

Want to sound off? Go for it.

Post comments, and let me know. It’s your site. I’m just a steward.

John

PS: Starting with “What do you want” brought the opening part of the U2 song “Zooropa” to mind. My favorite line: “It’ll be alright. You’ve got the right shoes to get you through the night.”

This is the one that bugs me: The technical articles don't print correctly from the Office developer center. The right side of the article is cut off. I have to follow the link to the article in MSDN to actually print the article and then navigate back to continue using the Office developer center. Please correct it so that when I click the print option from the box at the top of the article that the articles print correctly. It would be nice if the article content could also fit within my browser window when it is not minimized so that I don't have to scroll to the right.

I'm pretty new to Office development. I've only been doing it for a couple of weeks and have found the office developer center to be a great reference that I follow and utilize.

I should probably point out that the printing problem isn't isolated to the Office developer center as it appears (for me at least) to happen on all MSDN developer centers. So if you can do anything about that or spread the word, it would be appreciated.

If you're messing around with Windows Media Encoder (presumably as a user rather than a developer), it would be great if you could log some bugs regarding its oddly incomplete feature set.

The issues range from minor annoyances (why do I have to manually rename the output file to .asf for streaming when it could easily allow me to specify an output filename ending in .asf instead of .wmv) and mindless incompatibilities (why can't I turn on time-compression to speed up video that doesn't have an audio component?) to the worst UI of any Microsoft product (the output image size is specified on properties tab 3, but you aren't allowed to change it there, you have to progress to tab 4 to be allowed to change it).

If Microsoft wants content developers to ship content as WMV's and stream it as ASF's, they would do well not to completely piss off the content creators this way. Have you ever tried to convince someone who has uses Apple's video authoring tools to switch to Windows Media Encoder? I have. It's simply not possible.

I would personally like to see more "Fabrikam-like" code examples. Something that demonstrates a more end-to-end solution. While it's true that the Office solution accelerators are a good start, I think that even better "best practice" apps could be posted and discussed (taking a similar format as was taken describing the lifecycle of Fabrikam).

And, focusing on a little something closer to home. I am chomping at the bit for the updated InfoPath SDK (or whatever it'll be called) that allows for the integration of managed code. Making that available and publishing some articles around how it could best be leveraged would be tremendously beneficial for me.

Good Programming Music Good programming music is good to have at hand, especially if it's a weekend and you are still working. My good buddy John Durant is an avid programmer and music lover. He prefers U2 as his source of late night coding motivation. I couldn't agree more. But I'm also a big No Doubt fan. Check out their newest The Singles 1992-2003 CD. Small Side Note, John and I are writing a book together for Microsoft Press on the next version of Visual Studio Tools for Office. It's going to rock. So my next thought for the day....
