Smart Tags, WordML, and a serious accident

Briefly, I was in a serious collision with a truck while training on my Trek 5200. I have some broken bones, and I am just now starting to get a little bit of mobility. This is why I have not been blogging or doing much else. I apologize for the hiatus.

I thought I would come back with some WordML, smart tags, and a photo of my damaged wheel.

When you save Word 2003 documents in XML format, the articulated XML can convey any smart tag-recognized words you have in the document. Figure 1 shows my document which has a few of the terms for my accident already recognized.

Figure 1.

OK- These terms are recognized because they are part of a smart tag list file. I will dive into that detail tomorrow, and I am pretty sure I will be up for it.

Now, when we look at the XML elements in the documents (we will look at just one piece for a term), it looks like this:

  <w:p>
    <st1:accident w:st="on">
     <w:r>
      <w:t>Pain</w:t>
     </w:r>
    </st1:accident>
   </w:p>

Here, you can see the word marked up as a smart tag is accurately conveyed in the XML. How did Word know to make it an "accident" element? Because it is in my namespace for the smart tag, and this namespace is specified at the top of the document. More on that tomorrow.

When you execute the action for the word, it links you to a report of the accident. In this case, it links to a photo of the front wheel on my bicycle:

 Rock thought for the day: Ring Starr had an album whose title has stuck with me for many years, and the words have meant more to me lately: Time Takes Time.

Rock on.

The Ringo album title reminded me of a quote from the late Warren Zevon when he was interviewed by David Letterman shortly before his death.

Letterman asked "What do you know that we don't?"
Zevon replied "I know that you're supposed to enjoy every sandwich"

Great line.

It's a great line. Thanks for sharing it! I also love the line of Jim Morrison said after some reporter asked him about having not censored his lyrics for the Ed Sullivan show. The reporter said, "you may never do the Ed Sullivan show again, what do you think?", and Jim replied, "Hey, we DID the Ed Sullivan show." He didn't care about going back. He was one of the few rock artists who stayed true to his rebel ways. Regrettably, it's not a longetivity-friendly posture.

Ooh, that is really sad. I hope you heal quickly. How bad was the bike (other than the wheel)?

Thanks for the sympathy! It all helps.
The bike did surprisingly well. The OCLV frame by Trek is nearly bomb-proof. I need to have it looked at by a technician to be sure it is all still cool. There is damage to the headset, and the Richey handlebar is a bit tweaked. I put a major dent in the truck with my head and shoulder. I wish I had a photo of that.

I'm glad to hear that the bike didn't do too badly. When you invest a lot of money in a bike, it is sad to see it in a mangled mess on the side of the road (although usually the rider isn't doing too well themselves, and so that isn't the main consideration).

A friend of ours was in a major biking incident last year. He went head first into a cement barrier, and broke his collar bone, plus several other injuries. He was knocked out (his helmet split in two.) Fortunately, someone stopped and called 911. Also, the fire department retrieved his bike for him, which is against their policy. Thus, it wasn't stolen. The bike recovered (and so did he).

We used to be a lot less anal about our bicycle helmets, but now my husband and I wear them religiously (even though we HATE them).

Good luck, and speedy recovery!
