Office and XML- why we all care

So, yesterday I spent time at one of our internal conference events: Envision. It's a yearly event, and it is well attended by Microsoft employees or close partners from all over the world. I presented a session on XML support in Excel and Word (if you read my blog, you know why).

The very first question I was asked is this, "Can we have your demo source code?" Now, this is an important question because I had not even begun to present anything. It says so much about the way developers work. The old saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For developers, code, a solution, a demo is like a picture. It is worth more than a textbook. I think most deveopers were the kind of kids in school that just wanted to get to the hands-on-lab and forget all of the theory. They'll pick that up later...maybe.

Anyway, it was a lost of fun presenting, and the attendees energize me. I leave the session more pumped and motivated than they do. Also, in case any of them is reading this blog: No, I do not drink anything caffeinated. I'm just that big of a spaz.

So, here the links to articles that have the basis for my demos.

Importing XML Maps, XML Lists, and Dynamic Chart Sources in Excel 2003

Creating an End-to-End XML Solution with Word 2003 and Excel 2003

Obviously, I embellised them extensively, but you will see the foundation here.

Rock Thought for the day: Ziggy Stardust? Look- David Bowie still puts out good music. I recommend his Web site: www.davidbowie.com. You can listen to music, see video and so on. I think he has aged well musically. I can't say the same for every star that rose in the 70's. His sound is not heavy (I wish it were a little more). Its strength is that it retains an ethereal quality. What a voice.

Hey, anything he does with Reeves Gabrels just ROCKS. I was a huge fan of his Tin Machine project (if you don't own their two studio, one live album -- get them!), and was glad to see Reeves join Bowie's regular lineup.

To your point above, while his last couple albums lacked any standout hits, its all been solid work, and worth looking into. Especially his Earthling album. Love it. Heathen is also good.

any chance Microsoft will release the source of the Word 2003 XML Toolbox? After all it's free and a great sample to learn from!

Will we release the source to the XML Toolbox? It's a great question. I would LOVE to release this code. I have it sitting on the machine I am using to type this message. It was very well written code (we can thank Chris Kunicki for this- no surprise). However, to release it, we need to put it through more paces and hoops. Why? Because we are cautious about what we release and the condition it is in. Even if it is written by Bill Gates himself, we still need to do a lot of reviewing and other processes. Because of resource constraints, this is unlikely. We are already on to the next SDK, the next tool, etc.

I'll tell you what though, I will still bring this up at our next planning meeting.
thanks for the suggestion, Michael.

I attended one of your sessions today. It was great. And today's keynote and the Q&A was really cool. I am glad, I made it to the conference.

Hey, keep up the excellent work with the presentations. I saw both your presentations at the Office Conference (you probably don't remember, but you introduced yourself to me when you were walking around beforehand and then I came and interrupted you in the hall afterwards to tell you that you did a good job). Easily the best seminars at the conference and got me totally jacked up about VSTO. I have tonnes of questions, but now I need to defrag and digest it all...
