Beyond Compare

I am amazed at how many developers are still using windiff or VSS diff tool. Beyond Compare is great tool that I use almost daily. It allows you to diff files and folders using the context menu of Windows Explorer as well as through their UI.  It is as simple as right clicking on a file choosing "Select to Compare", right clicking another file choosing "Compare XYZ.doc".  For $30 it is a great buy and real time saver.

You can download a free trial at their website http://www.scootersoftware.com/

I don't see a shell extenstion though - that is the feature worth the money in my opinion.

And don't forget SubMerge that is part of TortoiseSVN which is an excellent shell extention to use Subversion sourcecontrol.

I think most people still use windiff because it is still shipped with MS flagship vs.net 2003. This means that MS, today, offers this tool as if it's the latest and the greatest. Perhaps MS should re-implement windiff to make it more useful.

(but I use winmerge, as it is more useful)

I agree. Obviously, the searching will be fixed with WinFX (http://msdn.microsoft.com/longhorn/understanding/pillars/winfs/default.aspx?pull=/msdnmag/issues/04/01/WinFS/default.aspx) - but I haven't heard anything about diff tools.

I have been using Beyond Compare for a few years now. With every release, the product gets better.

This blog post is almost 4 years old but Beyond Compare STILL kicks butt! It is the best diff tool I have ever used.
