FreeRice.com – Synchronously Learn for free and feed the hungry
I stumbled upon FreeRice.com today and had to share.
The site has quiz software that tests you on Math, Language, Art, Chemistry, English and Geography. For each question you answer correctly 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. The sponsors of the site display ads under the quiz, which pays for the rice.
According to FreeRice.com each person consumes 400 grams of rice per day and there are about 48 grains of rice per gram. So, 400x48 = 19,200 grains of rice needed to feed one person for a day.
As of June 16th, 2009 65.5 Billion Grains of Rice have been donated through the site – that’s 3.4 million days of food since 2007. On average for the month of June, 36 million grains were donated, that means they are feeding 1,875 people per day.
I just earned 1000 grains in about 5 minutes and I’m going to make a commitment to doing this every morning. If you are reading this now, please consider joining me in spending 5 minutes a day taking the quizzes – with 20 other people committing to the same we can together feed one person a day. Please add a comment to this blog if you are going to join me.
