I found it a fascinating process and I thought it would be illuminating to share what we go through. In fact, for the most part, we don't spend this much time on most icons. Generally, we just re-use icons from other parts of the system. If I need a refresh icon, there is a well-designed refresh icon available for me to use. You can think of the icons as a vocabulary, or a toolset that the design team can use. For wireless we didn't have the right "tools" to use, so we decided to invest the time to create the base wireless tool instead of modifying others.

So now, if I need an icon for "search for wireless networks", I can easily create one because there's an icon for "Search" and one for "Wireless". Five minutes later, they're combined into a single icon that represents "search for wireless network."

Where do icons come from?

"Why Software Sucks"...
