Visual Basic Express

In addition to writing documentation for the professional VB developer, I'll be updating the Visual Basic Express documentation set.  This documentation shows folks that are new to Visual Basic 2005 (whether you're migrating your skills from VB6, are new to programming, or are an experienced developer just wanting to learn Visual Basic) how to get started. The documentation is written in a much more relaxed, fun tone than what you'd find in other documentation.  I really like it!

With Visual Basic Express you can create Windows applications and console applications. While you can't create VSTO solutions with Visual Basic Express (unfortunately), if you're a VBA developer interested in moving to managed code, you might want to take a look at the tutorials, starter kits, and guided tour to get you started. You can then transfer your new skills to Office development. You can download Visual Basic Express at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/. And do let me know if there's any content you'd like to see added to the docs.

Hi kathleen,

Been reading you blog for a while now, via office zelorts.

(Dont like having to sign up to post a comment though, whats that about?)

anyway,

As a vba/desktop developer I would love to know how to develop managed Addins for Office with VBA express, like what Dennis if doing at Dicks  blog (www.dicks-blog.com). Dennis is using VS05 pro, although I think standard will do the same thing.

Also I would like to see a Express example of a .net com class. I've seen the VB fusion stuff, but could not get it to work with with Express.

Cheers, and thanks for the blog ;-)

Hi Ross,

Unfortunately, you can't develop add-ins for Office with VB Express at this time. It looks like Dennis is creating shared add-ins with VS 2005. If you have VS 2005 Professional edition, you'll be able to create the new VSTO add-ins using the new "Cypress" add-on that the VSTO team will be delivering. This add-on is a free download, but doesn't work with VB Express (also a free download). I'll look into .NET COM classes and see what I can come up with.

Re the sign-up to post comments: sorry about that. I've disabled annonymous comments as a way to hopefully discourage SPAM; besides I like to see who's following my blog. Thanks for reading!

# re: Visual Basic 6

Can anybody point me in the right direction? I am a non-technical person who had a program written for me three years ago in VB6 (I think). I sell the program from my website. It has worked fine up until just recently. There seems to be some sort of loading problem with PC's with Vista/Office2007.

Here's a typical error notice my customers receive:

The Bizpricer program that I purchaesd will not install properly. Please see

the attachement for the error message.  MSVBVM50.DLL was not

found.

Any help for me out there?

Hi Russ,  It looks like this application was created using VB5. The VB5 runtime files do not ship in Windows Vista.  You can download them here:
