GDS是Global Data Synchronization的缩写，如果实在要翻译成中文，就是“全球数据同步”的意思，其主要目的是要把全球的产品信息进行同步，为供应商和零售商搭建一个沟通的平台，从而使整个供应链流畅起来。 GDS的标准现在主要由一个叫GS1的组织把持，GS1有一个1SYNC的分支机构，从技术具体实现了上面提到的平台，建立了物理存在的数据中心/数据池，供会员同步数据，进行数据查询以及更新等功能。 看到GDS这个缩写词，让人想起GPS（全球定位系统），如果说GPS从空间上把地球上的每个物体标注了物理位置，那么GDS的目标就是把地球上所有的产品进行标注。一旦实现了GDS，每个产品在走下生产线的那一天其信息就被全球的供应商/零售商同步得到，包括它的产地，规格以及图像信息等等。
