Who do you allow to define the knowledge and expertise the user actually possesses and when do you determine what is the relative knowledge evaluation timeline. As in your example above, should your programming background be considered or should it only be recent work experience. There are many variables involved in shaping a user's "knowledge profile".

Our approach has thus far been to allow the user's documents (the ones they create and read) as well as the email they process (Inbox and Sent) as a methodology for creating what we call "an unbiased knowledge profile value". While the user may have a view of their expertise, their manager may have a different view, and their schooling may provide yet again a different "set of rose colored glasses" that shed light on what they actually know! We have developed a solution that allows a user's information to "speak for itself" by extracting the "Thematic DNA" (C) of the document. Essentially, we created a "knowledge seed" for every type of document the user works with. Based on "expertise profile generation" variables that can be user selected or enterprise wide mandated via Group Policies, we collapse all of the individual document "knowledge seeds" into one "expert profile". The Expert Profile is expressed as a Thematic Taxonomy signature for the user. The User's "expert profile" can then be used to accomplish several knowledge or social network tasks:

- find other people with a similar expert profile that is 90% similar
- find documents that are 90% similar to the user's expert profile
- route new documents within the company, or at least alert users about them, to users with an expert profile that is X% match
- allow an individual to search the Intranet or Internet based on their own expert profile
- allow an individual to search for people with specific expertise based on the thematic signature of a document.

Part of the great challenge of knowledge and social networks will be determining the methodology by which user's are given or assigned knowledge profiles, elements that are then leveraged within a knowledge or social network environment. We know that Microsoft is evolving the underlying technology to support knowledge and social network based applications that aid the information worker. This same infrastructure will be available to all companies. But once implemented, tuning the technology towards the particular company, the user community, the industry, as well as the communities that they work in will be, at least in our view, the really challenging area within which the demonstration of the true value of knowledge and social networks will take place.

The fundamental question is: what variables and mechanisms are to be used to demtermine a user's knowledge or expertise profile?

Our intent at Cirilab is to leverage Microsoft's Knowledge Network foudation to create knowledge and social network based intelligent applications.

Arnold Villeneuve
Vice President
www.cirilab.com
613-833-0984
re: Knowledge Network vs. “Expert” Location Systems

I recently started researching and writing about expert location (http://www.ddmcd.com/expertise_management_index.html). I think your initial model of an "expert location" system is a bit of a straw man with its emphasis on finding "the expert" and as a result having that expert be targeted and overwhelmed. Perhaps a better term would be an "expertise management system" based on the idea of that many people might have knowledge about many related topics. Their willingness and ability to share that knowledge -- and the fact that they possess it -- could be just as important as what they know. Whether or not this qualifies as a "knowledge network" is a terminology issue; "knowledge" in my mind isn't networked, it's the people who possess the knowledge that are networked, and their (multiple and overlapping) networks form and dissolve for many any different reasons.

2007 MOSS Resource Links (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server)

Here is an assortment of various 2007 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Documentation / Reference Materials...

2007 MOSS Resource Links (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server)

2007 MOSS Resource Links (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) Here is an assortment of various 2007 Microsoft
