Citywide WiFi: Grand Haven, MI Did It First
I just took a look at my Referrers list (thanks, Scott) and noticed that a number of visitors have arrived at my site recently by googling the words "citywide" and "wifi". I love Google referrals. URL-embedded keywords rock! Of course, a9.com casts a very long shadow that reaches all the way to googlandia, CA.
Anyway, upon following the link, I learned from Walkersands that Grand Haven, MI was probably the first city to implement a citywide WiFi network like the Wireless network I recently proposed for Redmond.
Way, way cool. That's bigger than a first ascent of Everest; and brilliant Geek-O Tourism marketing to boot!
[walkersands.com] "Grand Haven, Michigan will go down in the history books as the first city in the United States to offer city-wide WiFi. Zamora, Spain was the first city in the world to do this, but, as a result of the efforts of Ottawa Wireless, Grand Haven wins bragging rights for the United States."
In what will surely be a hallmark visit for international Geek-O Tourism, I plan to visit Grand Haven, MI (like Jack) as soon as possible with my wife, my wifi-enabled laptop, and my daughter. If you or somebody you know lives in Grand Haven or owns a sailboat thereabouts, please let me know as I'd love to visit you while I'm there. Perhaps our own Alex Lowe can give me some regional travel pointers?
