Petard date, 20040813

The new Petard was waiting for me when I got home today.

M was patient as usual as I ran upstairs to put everything back into Petard Mk II. <screw> <screw> <insert> <insert> Power-up.

Same problem. (Don't tell the kind folk I bought it from) <experiment> <experiment> <disconnect> <remove> Power-up.

OKdOK. End result? Something to do with the extra power cable for my ATI 9700. If it's connected, the machine dies, if it's not, the machine doesn't die, but it does stop, whining about the unconnected power cable. Fortunately, there is an ATI 9100 on the motherboard. Unfortunately, it's not DVI. <search><search><find VGA cable>Power-up.

OK, go into BIOS. Look around, enable SATI. Lockup.

Power-down. Power-up. Go past BIOS. Lockup.

Open case. Root around. Oh, the ICE module isn't *exactly* flat on the CPU. Oops. Remove ICE fan, CPU strap. Reseat ICE module, reverse. Power-up.

Here I am now. XP booted, happy, happy (so far). "Just" a 9100 for video, hopefully it will do for now.

TTFN - Kent

Update: blue screen, lockup, crash, driver install, dialog, dialog, blue screen

Unhappiness is with me.
