A modest proposal: Date/Time considered evil

After documenting some of the problems I had with Date/Time when creating my RSS Aggregator , and reading a Google presentation at ETech, I came up with a noble idea. We all use the same date and time. Whereever we are in the world, whatever time of day.

Early to bed, early to rise

A while back, Karl asked me to discuss "Early Adoption" here (or somewhere). I said I would, then let it bubble for a while, as I was conflicted. I decided to let my internal debate finally boil over here, though. I'll let you decide which feels better

The InfoPath less travelled

I've been meaning to learn InfoPath for a while, and the new(ish) Toolkit for Visual Studio .NET, plus Christmas downtime gave me a chance. See the babbling in the full post. You've been warned -- I know, hard to believe I'm supposed to write for a living.

In Remembrance

I'm not usually known for "pro patria mortis" feelings, but thank a veteran today. IN FLANDERS FIELDS In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce

How to catch a Roadrunner.

The scene: Cafe 36 Dramatis personae: D , B and K I can't remember how the discussion turned to the greatest mind that ever came out of the Southwestern US desert, but it was D that began the rant, "You know how the coyote would strap on rocket skates,

Blogjutsu vs. spam

In between my other e-mails, I get a fair bit of spam (as I'm sure all of you do as well). Every once & a while, I get one that I feel like researching a little. ( DNSStuff rocks for this) While spending a few moments tracking down the source of one,

Petard date, 20040813

The new Petard was waiting for me when I got home today. M was patient as usual as I ran upstairs to put everything back into Petard Mk II. <screw> <screw> <insert> <insert> Power-up. Same problem . (Don't tell the kind folk I

Third verse is the same as the first (just in reverse)

In the ongoing serial drama I call Petard , the latest episode had Petard blow a power supply a few nights ago (at least that's what I and D think is the problem). Fortunately, NewEgg has a decent return policy (and pretty good prices if you're looking

RSS aggregators as a DoS

NetCraft has an amusing news item this week talking about how RSS aggregators cause traffic on sites to essentially pulse: Infoworld.com experiences a "massive surge of RSS newsreader activity at the top of every hour," according to Chad Dickerson , the

Attack of the mini-meme

meme : /meem/ [coined on analogy with `gene' by Richard Dawkins] n. An idea considered as a {replicator}, esp. with the connotation that memes parasitize people into propagating them much as viruses do. More colloquilally: a way to store/share a moment

How I spent my summer vacation

No one asked, but I decided to share a few photos with you about my summer vacation. Many of these are courtesy (and artfully Photoshopped) by my bestest and host, Graeme Spafford. The “penis“ bridge - aka Esplanade Riel. New footbridge across

That's one...

I've just realized that the ASP.NET Developer Center has actually been open for business for a year now. (I had thought the anniversary was 6/26, but it's actually 6/12 ). So much for doing something special for the anniversary. Sorry about that. I had

Disabling comments (hopefully temporarily)

Until the blog spam problem goes away, or I have time to play Whack-a-mole more, I'm disabling comments. Send them directly to me if you really must tell me something. TTFN - Kent

Avoiding "High volume e-mail distributors"

While I enjoy spam (or “High volume e-mail deployers” as some call it [caution - big video, requires DivX]) as much as the next person, John (no blog) pointed out Mailinator to me today. It's a service that is essentially a one hour inbox.
