Virtuelle Gemeinschaften boomen - Second Life und andere Soziale Netzwerke

Am 22. Feb. 2007 fand im Rahmen der APA-EBC Community eine Veranstaltung zum Thema virtuelle Welten und sozial Gemeinschaften statt. Second Life statt bei der Podiumsdiskussion prominent und stellvertretend für soziale Netzwerke im Mittelpunkt. Es diskutierten: Dieter Merkl (Technische Universität Wien), Rainer Friedl (diamond:dogs), Harald Haghofer (SER Solutions Österreich), Martina Klenkhart (Hewlett Packard), Harald Leitenmüller (Microsoft) und Alexander Szlezak (Gentics).

Ao.Univ.Prof. Dr. Dieter Merkl vom Institut für Softwaretechnik und Interaktive Systeme an der Technischen Universität Wien nutzte Second Life gleich live, um in die Thematik virtuelle Welten einzuführen. Das stellt man sich am besten wie ein 3D Computer Spiel vor, indem man sich vor einer künstlichen Leinwand triff. Doch es gibt noch mehr. Die Kollegen von Prof. Merkl kamen zur gleichen Zeit in Gestalt von Avataren hinzu und konnten mit uns Chaten oder durch div. Gesten ihre Meinung ausdrücken. Second Life ist ein prominentes Beispiel für eine 3D Welt, die versucht, die Realität möglichst genau abzubilden. In der Form von Avataren tummeln sich dort mittlerweilen mehr als 4 Millionen Virtuelle, um diese virtuelle Welt zu gestalten, Geld zu verdienen, zu verlieren oder sozialen Netzwerken beizutreten. Täglich werden über Second Life immerhin fast 2 Millionen USD umgesetzt. Ein guter Grund über die Integration von Second Life und ihrer e-Business Plattform nachzudenken und den aktuellen Hype zu nutzen, wenn das Zielpublikum für sie von Interesse ist.

Bereits in der Podiumsdikussion mußte ich aber kritisch anmerken, daß nicht alles eitel und Wonne ist. Ich finde es bedenklich, daß die Teilnehmer meistens nicht ausreichend informiert oder gänzlich ungeschult sind. Daß sie z.B. durch ihre Aktivitäten in diesem System, kontrolliert durch Linden, Informationen über sich preisgeben ohner es zu wissen. Es erinnert an die emsige Datensammlung von Google nur wesentlich mächtiger, da jede Bewegung, jeder Chat einfach alles festgehalten werden kann. Was natürlich nicht passiert und nie passieren, nie verwendet und nie verwendet werden wird....

Wen diese Welt reizt, sollte sich bevor er investiert gut informieren, einmal ausprobieren und dann genau überlegen, was und wie er es dort erreichen will. Er wird dort viel Zeit verbringen. Denn eins ist sicher, der virale Effekt von Second Life macht auch süchtig und auch sie wollen dann immer mehr und mehr. Und genau das wiederum ist gut für die Betreiber, eben die Lindens, den so und nur so vermehrt sich Geld.

Übrigens Second Life ist nicht die einzige virtuelle Welt und nicht das einzige soziale Netzwerk. Die gibt es schon lange - auch in der realen Welt.

APA E-Business Community - Virtuelle Gemeinschaften boomen im Internet

Am 22. Februar 2007 findet der nächste APE E-Business Community Event im Haus der Musik statt. Thematisiert werden die virtuellen Gemeinschaften im Internet.

Auf der Einladung steht:
Die populäre Online-Welt Second Life macht es vor: Universitäten halten Web-Seminare ab, Firmen veranstalten transkontinentale Meetings, Markenartikler profitieren von Werbeeffekten und künftig wohl auch von zusätzlichen Umsätzen. Das Engagement in virtuellen Communities hat laut Experten Potenzial.

Aber zuerst ist mal Vorsicht geboten, denn es hat schon so manchen süchtig oder pleite gemacht...

Die virtuelle Umgebungen Second Life ist ein horizontaler Marktplatze veredelt mit grafischen 3 dimensionalem Virtual Reality Metaphern. Der attraktive spielerische Ansatz und die kommerzielle Triebfeder, eben Handel von Waren aller Art mit geringster Regulierung, führen letztendlich zur Renaissance eines virtuellen Bazars. Wie beim klassischen Bazar florieren am Rande des kommerziellen Interesses kulturelle, soziale und im wesentlichen experimentelle Gemeinschaften. Die Oberflächlichkeit des menschliches Vertrauen der Mitglieder untereinander, aber verhindert noch jede Nachhaltigkeit. Im Gegensatz dazu existieren im Internet sehr erfolgreiche Gemeinschaften wie z.b. das Microsoft Developer Networks (MSDN). Es besteht mittlerweilen aus 4000 aktiven Bloggern, deren Informationen mehrere Millionen Mitglieder anziehen, die lesen, bewerten und kommentieren. Die erfolgreichsten MSDN Blogger generieren mehr als 90 Millionen Page Views pro Monat. Die über mehrere Jahre aufgebaute Vertrauensbasis zwischen den Teilnehmern hat zur Etablierung dieser realen Informationsgemeinschaft geführt. Neue Dienste wie Codeplex.com oder Live.com erweitern die Interaktionsmöglichkeiten im Sinne von Web 2.0 stetig. Eine Virtualisierung und Verschmelzung dieser oder ähnlicher Gemeinschaften mit Plattformen wie Second Life ist absehbar, sollten die offenen Fragen der Standardisierung und Kontrolle, und damit Basis für virtuelle soziale Fairness, geklärt sein.

Es wird sicherliche eine spannende Veranstaltung...

Semantic Web via Web 2.0 for the masses

At the Semantics 2006 conference we will meet and discuss the status of Semantic Web. I will present some aspects of Microsofts perspective on the semantic web project.

Session abstract:
What does it mean to drive adoption of semantic technologies like W3C has developed during the last year to meet the needs of the masses? Industry and consumer prefer pragmatic, easy and compelling approaches. But at the first glimpse semantic technologies appear to be complex, a niche approach for academics only and not tangible for masses.

This session discusses Microsoft’s perspective on semantic web technologies and how the web ecosystem should evolve within the next decade to become people ready.

It is quite interesting for me at the moment to scan various articles and publications about this topic to get an emotional impression how the masses feel about this initiative. Many publications are currently reflecting that the industry is very sceptic about the semantic web concept. Some believe it's too academic and not applicable for the masses. Many demand more proven and pragmatic approaches.
Nobody doubts that the concept is reasonably but many have not identified their specific benefits yet.

Let's asume Semantic Web is the new web design, construction and usage paradigm. Adopting new paradigms always requires a dramatic mental shift and a critical mass that understands the fundamental changes and its implicit benefits. The paradigm gap, which is everything not understood by the "non experts", has to be bridged by emotional believes. At the moment the characteristic of this bridging is high complexity and mostly futuristic.

But there seems to grow a grassroot alternative approach through Web 2.0 principles. You could say Web 2.0 is more a bottom up approach while classic semantic web principles (ontology,..) are top down. And you will see more and more announcements concrete concepts like micro formats in the news soon that drive the semantic web idea organically.

I will collect a lot of material during the next weeks and publish a summary of my session from the Semantics 2006 conference. You should have an eye on the sementic web activities. There are a lot of great concepts already awailable now.

IT Mega Trends

I spend a great deal of my time with analyzing technical concepts and monitoring IT trends. Based of observation I prepare pieces of strategy advice and scenarios for coping with market dynamics.

I have just finished a paper for one of my customers to compare some “IT Mega Trends”. It was an interesting journey through a lot of publication of various analysts and vendors.
I included in my comparison e.g. (sorry, some analyst sites require user registration):

The first challenges when reading these publications and browsing these sites was finding matching terminologies. Each of them has a consistent and agreeable-sounding vocabulary. Marketing and competitive strategies departments have done a fabulous job. It took me a while to map corresponding principles and concepts.

The second challenge has been to find a consistent level of abstraction to allow comparison. These concepts span from very abstract to more or less pragmatic.

All of them address the same business problems, needs and suggest somehow similar solutions (agility, complexity, costs, business value, productivity...). But suggested architectural solution concepts differ dramatically. They are somehow based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles (see CBDI Forum or .NET Architecture Center Strategies with Pat Helland or Keith Short).

There may be many more IT Mega Trends you may be missing here but these seem to be the most compelling ones at the moment.
