Awesome. I am really excited to see what innovation Microsoft can bring to the search engine table. I also say keep up the good work.

Ahh...I thought you launched. :)

At what levels was the beta at? 50% of all MSN searches? 75%? It will be interesting for us all to figure out how effective your ensuing marketing campaign is towards generating additional MSN traffic.

Congrats! I like the design. I am certain the results will improve over time. But it's a good start.

I wish to thank you for trying and improving MSN home page.
Here are some of the first impressions and comments for improvements:
Despite your effords it is still full of clutter. I should be able to know what each link on the page is for just by looking at it. I shouldn't be forced to click something to find out. This should be your design goal.
1. Near the news section there are many featured links from what I understand. Examples:
Top 10 Super Bowl Moments // Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kevin Dyson (© John Gaps III/A (What?)
Staircase and hallway (© Better Homes & Gardens (What what?)
ALSO ON MSN (What is this link for?)
Style remixes, hot color & more
etc, etc.
These links showcase different articles and pages from other MSN Services. Well, you should say next to each link from what service it comes, eg. Slate Magazine: Are video games ...? MSN Shopping: New cheap ...
Also, you should group these featured link under the service name or not show them at all. Example:
the link Can you build a better brain?
sits exactly below some other links which seems to point from the text to MSN Shopping but this link itself points to Encarta E-Learning. Very inconsistent. Also, separate ads from the other content.
3. More search tabs. I can search music, web, etc but what about shopping, movies, tv listings, travel and ticket info, money, stocks, city guides, white pages, MSN Video, etc, etc, all the other MSN services that you have hidden around, plus ability to search newsgroups, dictionary, thesorous, etc. All from a single place with an easy drop-down box for selecting the service. Why do you need tabs anyway. Why not a drop-down box? Plus, I know that there is such a box on MSN Search page but it does not include everything and having both the tabs and the drop-down box on that page is confusing.
4. This day in history: you have the current date (well not always so current) somewhere on your home page and when clicked it shows this day in history from Encarta. How should I know that it does exactly that without clicking it? It should say "this day in history", otherwise I wouldn't know.
5. Integrate it with Hotmail. Allow eg. to search my Hotmail inbox from a single place.
Generally you have a wider array of services than most other online portals and yet you make it complicated and difficult to find and understand. It is there but do you imagine that people will spend much more than a few seconds exploring it? Drop all these featured links or at least explain and group them. Leave ads out of the home page and explain each service clearly.

The beta was great, high quality search results. Now its gone live, the search result are regonalised and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off... search.msn.com redirects to search.msn.co.uk! STOP IT!! If i want UK results I can type .co.uk instead of .com.

try searching for c# on google and on msn. Look at the differences - google seems to know the actual 'homepage' of c# whilst msn just picks up on all those people who have spammed 'c#' in the content and keywords. Seems to me this should've been ironed out in the betas.

Cool. Nice to see it's launched. Its got a nice trendy new background gradient - and seems more efficient.

I find it hilarious how everything - like all the new and latest updates - work with every browser on the mac (safari, opera, firefox), except Microsoft's Internet Explorer. MSN looks a mess. Even Firefox displays it correctly.

Since I can't work out for the life of me how to use the Wiki, I shall leave feedback here about a few things;

1 :: MSN Search is great. I reckon this is a Google-beater. Really.

2 :: I am absolutely gutted that I'm unable to use any of the MSN Toolbars. I'm on a Mac, on OSX, and use Firefox as my primary web browser - because Safari's crap, and Internet Explorer is worse. Most of Microsoft's own services (now including MSN.com) don't work on Internet Explorer on the mac.

This has resulted me in using A9 toolbar (which is actually quite cool).

3 :: The RSS Feeds on My MSN is great. I've just been editing the urls you supplied and I can add any feed I want to it.

4 :: I don't know if this is your guys department, but MSN Spaces - none of it works properly on macs. The blog bit is fine - but you can't manage your photo gallery at all - and trackbacks dont work. On every mac browser.

There is a problem, Houston.

I live in Finland so I have Finnish as my OS locale **in order to get Finnish punctuation**

However I have IE Language set to English UK (followed as it happens by Finnish but this is irrelevant) to avoid getting content in Finnish.

If I search with "WSS" in Google and all other search engines (if necessary after setting my preferences to English) there are many pages of English items and I have never seen any Finnish selections (which is how I want it)

If I search with "WSS" in your's **even after setting my preferences to English and refreshing** the first five items are in Finnish - coincidence, I don't think so.

Please, if you are going to make assumptions, base them on my IE settings and not on my Locale. I have set my IE settings for a reason.

Better still if I set my preferences to English, assume like everyone else that that means I don't want local Finnish content automatically placed first in the list no matter how irrelevant to the search but that I want English content first. Why else should I bother to set my preferences to English ??

I'm living in The Netherlands. My Locale is set to English, and MSN Search is set to English. If I enter the question: "What is the speed of light in miles per second?" (without the quotes) into MSN Search, I get rubbish results (1,322,741 of them, to be precise).

If I enter the same question into Google, I get precisely one hit returned: the correct answer from Google's calculator.

I am not impressed.

MSN Search relaunched with music and Encarta integration as well as RSS results. Bill Gates: "Input from millions of our customers - including me - was crucial to our efforts to make MSN Search the best it can be."...

:) One thing though is its impossible to find a Redmond Coffee Shop using MSN search. Try it in google and MSN and see what I mean :)

The sponsored links are much more intrusive with MSN Search than with Google. That is very annoying.

I agree, Google's Calculator is cool, and I hope MSN Search adds a similar feature. But in the same vein, there are things Google won't answer easily. For example, I typed in: "What day is Valentines Day?" and Google gives me back 3,830,000 results, while MSN Search (while still returning over 1 million results, has at the top: "Answer:
Saint Valentine’s Day,a holiday honoring lovers. It is celebrated February 14 by the custom of sending greeting cards or gifts to express affection...."

Pretty sweet. I wish all search engines could do all things equally as well, but for now it's off to Google to find out quick unit conversions and scientific constants, and MSN Search for more everyday type questions.

Which name and which url is the easiest to remember, the less likely to misspell and the most likely to tell your friends, www.google.com (or just google) or search.msn.com? An easier url should be advertised like www.msnsearch.com. Also, easier urls for the other search features should be advertised like for the newsbot and not newsbot.msnbc.msn.com.

Integrate electronic books listings into the search results like you now do with MSN Music. Microsoft already has a service for e-books and for comparing prices of e-books at http://www.mslit.com/
Why keep it hidden?

When MSN gets good it will just be the same as Google because that’s what you get using a non-human search. The only alternative set of results can only be powered by a human directory. Looksmart is powered by Zeal and it does do a good job IMO.

Well, not for me, it doesn't. The default results (remember, with English as my preferred setting) gives as the first hit:

"... Valentine's Day Screensavers Meer screensavers Valentijnsdag Wereldwijd - (Argentina) San Valentín - (Belgium) Valentijn - (Chile) El Día de los enamorados - (Danmark) Valentine - (Europe) Gifts Of Course ... ", followed by over 6 million over hits...

If I then repeat the search from this results page, and this time explicitly check the "only English" box which has now appeared, then the first hit says:

... The origins of Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is steeped in tradition. Named after St Valentine – the Roman Catholic Church recognises 3 St Valentine’s – the patron saint of lovers." and there's over 5 million further hits.

I suspect that you are somewhere else in the world, and MSN Search makes false assumptions about us based on location.

Following the announcement of the launch of the new (non-beta) MSN search website (oh yeah...like the RSS feed idea guys)...the local Australian arm of MSN, ninemsn, has put a letter from Bill Gates up on their site for people to read......

The beta was good, but now live your redirecting by geographical location which is awful, as is being said by many disgruntled searchers.
WWW = world wide web, doh! , not i would like to be redirected and shown only a selection of whats really available.

Couple of suggestions for you:

1. The design of the page places most emphasis on an empty blue box. That means the empty area above the actual search input is the page's focal point. While a designer may claim that it draws the eye towards the search, the actual search area itself should be much closer to being part of the viewer's original focus.

2. The search area itself is very small - it is, what, approx 100-120 px in width? Yet isn't this part be thepart inviting the first purpose of the page? And why is it so crammed with text?


Both above points mean that a lot of the actual emphasis is taken from the actual search function. Look at Google - it's there clear in the center, and is large enough to be inviting.

In terms of design ethic, the MSN search looks like it would rather escape user attention and not be used.


Simply feedback - I actually have the .com form as my homepage for the time being, and the results seem good. But it seems the design could have been better thought out, to make the whole search apparatus more inviting looking.

PS - Simply extending the search options and search box in the lower half of the box to actually fill it would make the search function a lot more inviting - maybe also pad that area by 5px to space out the text for easier reading.

Anyone in the search department try that on your user base and see which is preferred?

Good search facility but:

- Cached pages don't work! If you can't support this feature remove it. Having things that don't work is ugly.
- I am automatically redirected to the search page that you guys think I want. I know what I want, don't redirect me.

I am using the UK search. Default to regional search is fine however add a option to Search the globe.

I like what you have so far MSN, a few more tweaks and it will get even better.

About time there was new competition to Google. I like how fast your spider indexes sites; much, much faster than what I've seen Google do. Congrats but please don't destroy your competition (or attempt to do so) a la Netscape.

I think that search for images should allow to specify the language too. I was looking for "tasse", which means "taxes" in Italian, but I got a lot of images of cups, since that is the French meaning...

I like the new page, but there is only one problem. A lot of people go to google because the frontpage is naked. Is not a portal. The best way for microsoft to compete with google is to create another domain where the front page can be naked.

Create a new website powered by the same technology as msn. Give it an easy name to remember. The new page will be used only for searching, no banner ads and no ads word. If microsoft can create a naked search page without banner ads and words ads, it will take all business from google. People getting annoyed with ads already.

Re: Jean - Naked home page - you raise some valid concerns. If you're interested in having a naked search home page from MSN, pls consider using the MSN Search web page at www.msnsearch.com and see if this fits your needs. This is the main entry page into the search engine and the URL redirect is a little easier to remember. Thanks for your feedback.

I hate the local redirection issue. I want results from msn.com not msn.somethingelse. This situation is good only for Google: guys like me will keep on using them as a search engine
