Mount ISO on Vista RTM

If you're like me, we keep a lot of our stuff (backups, movies, install disks) in a DVD/CD image format (ISO), here's a great way of mounting ISO images on Vista RTM and it's FREE.

(I'm running Vista RTM and mounting a Vista RTM ISO image file. Hope I don't confuse you)

They have builds for Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista and x64 editions.

There were some reports that it worked on Builds 5536 and some RC1s but many were having issues with getting it to work. I've just tried it on an RTM build of Vista and it worked "magically".

you can download MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM here.

Need a tool to make ISO images from CD/DVDs? here's a simple one from Scott Hanselman's blog: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/FreeISODiskImageBurningUtilityThatWorksOnVista.aspx

*UPDATE: Daemon Tools already has a Virtual CD/DVD rom tool that works on Vista too, and touted to be able to emulate all known copy protections on the market today. Try it out here: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5

Let me know which utility you like better.

The WinXP Virtual CD PowerToy works on Vista, that's what I've been using.

I dunno on which RTM version of Vista you 'magically' istalled this.. on my 64 bit Vista RTM you can't install any driver that was not digitally signed, like this one.

i'm running on Vista RTM 32bit x86. Not sure about 64bit. I do have a side effect, everytime i reboot the machine, I have to reinstall MagicISO for it to work again.

# re: Mount ISO on Vista RTM

People with vista 64 rtm ultimate edition, cannot use any of the following yet:

Daemon Tools (hardly installs.. caught in a loop)

UltraISO (digitally unsigned)

MagicISO (digitally unsigned)

PowerISO (digitally unsigned)

WinImage (digitally unsigned)

Vortual CD (digitally unsigned)

Virtual CloneDrive (os platform not supported)

TweakVI (the virtual cd plugin aint free)

And guess what.. they all claim on their websites that they work specifically on vista 64 as well. Maybe they meant RC1/2. lol

HELP !! =)

Another one..

VirtualISO (digitally unsigned)

How in the world do you disable this digital signature mandatory on drivers ?!

And another one..

Alcohol 52% (caught in a loop 'setup needs to reboot windows' over and over again, just like with d-tools)

# re: Mount ISO on Vista RTM

MagicISO doesnt work as Vista needs digitally signed drivers. Daemon Tools 4.08 works on x64 Vista.

Use the Vista BootLoaderTool (provisional app, not included): allows unsigned apps on x64

Nice write-up using Virtual Clone Drive.  Works for Vista but not 64bit Vista.

Push F8 during vista boot, and instead of selecting safe mode, choose the option that says, "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"

That's all you need to do, afaik.

# Serious issues with Virtual Clone Drive

I tried VCD first, but it would generate IO errors with ISOs that worked perfectly fine when burned.  I then tried MagicISO and it works really well for mounting these very ISOs (whose MD5 checksums were fine).

Daemon Tools installer has just been updated, and actually works on Vista x64.

Magic ISO returns IO errors.. :-(

# re: Mount ISO on Vista RTM

Daemon Tools now contains spyware. I would avoid it until they clean up their act.

@ed n

Yeah, the free version has adware (not spyware, but close enough) now, but if buy the full version, there's no adware.  I wouldn't say it's a horrible deal at ~€16($25 USD), but why buy when you can get the same thing for free elsewhere?
