Initializing the DomainProjectPicker dialog

One of my goals for the TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP was to improve the connectivity experience of the tool. To achieve that I wanted to allow users to connect to multiple Team Foundation Servers at the same time, and to allow users to connect only to a subset of team projects from a particular Team Foundation Server.

The tool was already using the DomainProjectPicker dialog but I had to make minor changes in the code in order to allow users to select a subset of team projects. Soon I got to the point where I wanted to initialize the DomainProjectPicker dialog with the team projects to which the user was already connected.

With the help of the documentation and this MSDN forum thread I have implemented my initialization logic. I started testing the new connectivity experience and I noticed that it worked fine with my Team Foundation Server 2005 and Team Foundation Server 2008 servers but it did not work with my Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 server. That seemed like the right time to switch my “developer” hat to my “escalation engineer” hat.

In order to make sure that it is not something specific to Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2, I checked if the dialog works as expected in Team Explorer 2008. The fact that the dialog worked fine from Team Explorer 2008 meant that I was doing something wrong. In order to take a closer look at the DomainProjectPicker dialog in Team Explorer 2008, I have attached WinDbg (comes with Debugging Tools for Windows) to devenv.exe.

After I have loaded the SOS debugging extension I have taken a look at the managed callstack:

I got lucky with !clrstack and I could get the address (0x03922c58, line 49) of the DomainProjectPicker dialog. I have used !do (DumpObj) to view the DomainProjectPicker and DomainProjectPickerInternal objects. The DomainProjectPickerInternal class had the m_defaultSelectedProjects (line 550) property that stored the SortedList with the default team project selection.

Using a combination of !do and !da (DumpArray) commands I was able to confirm that the SortedList used in Team Explorer 2008 contained the same keys and values as the SortedList that I was passing to the dialog in my application. Then I have noticed that the SortedList passed in Team Explorer 2008 is using a comparer (line 13):

The SortedList used by Team Explorer 2008 was using StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase (line 17). After taking a closer look at the URIs of my registered servers and I noticed that only my Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 had a URI which contained both lower and upper cases (http://lszomoru-tfs10:8080/tfs/DefaultCollection). The casing of the URI and the fact that I did not use a case insensitive SortedList was the root cause of the problem.

To fix my problem, I changed the constructor of the SortedList.

In the Team Foundation Server 2010 object model, the DomainProjectPicker class has been marked as obsolete. A new TeamProjectPicker class has been implemented which replaces the DomainProjectPicker class. In couple of weeks I will start working on the next release of the TFS Administration Tool which will use the Team Foundation Server 2010 object model so I will have the chance to play around with the TeamProjectPicker class.

TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP has been released

I am pleased to announce that the first community tech preview of the TFS Administration Tool 2.0 has been released. You can download it from the TFS Administration Tool project site.

We have had the source code lying around in the source tree for some time and our initial plan was to release the new version of the tool during autumn. Since our initial schedule has slipped, and many users asked about support for Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 after it has been released, we have decided to delay the release a bit more.

The last couple of weeks the team has worked very hard in order to add support for Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2. With this release we wanted to support all versions of Team Foundation Server (2005, 2008, 2010 Beta 2), so we built the tool with the Team Foundation Server 2008 object model. Team Explorer 2008 Service Pack 1 is all you need to install and use TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP with all available versions of Team Foundation Server.

Features included in this release:

  • Support for available versions of Team Foundation Server (2005, 2008, 2010 Beta 2)
  • Multiple simultaneous server connection
  • Bulk edit of users
  • New user interface
  • Application tracing

Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 Best Practices Analyzer

In case you have been following my blog you might have noticed that I went “dark” for the last couple of months from a blogging perspective. Apologies for that. I am part of the team working on the Team Foundation Server Best Practices Analyzer and during the last couple of months we were very busy rewriting the Best Practices Analyzer so that it can validate a Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 deployment.

Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 Best Practices Analyzer is part of the Team Foundation Server PowerTools 2010 Beta 2 which you can download from here. Unlike the rest of the PowerTools you can install Best Practices Analyzer on any client machine that has .NET Framework 2.0 and PowerShell installed.

Before getting into the details I wanted to give you a little bit of background information about the Best Practices Analyzer tool and the Best Practices Analyzer team. When Team Foundation Server 2005 was released, the product unit has heard a lot of feedback from customers that the product was difficult to install and configure but it was even more difficult to troubleshoot incorrectly configured servers. In order to address this feedback the Team Foundation Server product unit has started the Best Practices Analyzer effort. This is a voluntary effort and the team is formed by a mixture of people from the Team Foundation Server product unit and Customer Service and Support organization.

The Team Foundation Server 2008 Best Practices Analyzer was built on top of the Windows Server System SDK developed by the Exchange team. This SDK was discontinued, so when we started working on the new version of the next version of Best Practices Analyzer we have spent a significant amount of time looking at new possible platforms. A possible option was to use Service Modeling Language however after we reviewed the documentation and created couple of prototypes we realized that it did not fit the needs of a tool like the Best Practices Analyzer. Service Modeling Language was not designed for implementing Best Practices Analyzer tools for an environment spanning across multiple machines. We have passed along our feedback to the team developing the Service Modeling Language and they will improve the platform in the next version. We hope to use Service Modeling Language for developing the Best Practices Analyzer for the version of Team Foundation Server which will come after Team Foundation Server 2010.

The team has come to the conclusion that since the current SDK met our needs, we should continue using it until a better platform would be available. Since we have chosen to use the same SDK as before we had the opportunity to create a Best Practices Analyzer tool which could handle all three versions of Team Foundation Server (2005/2008/2010). We have consulted some of our key stakeholders and in order to align with the rest of the PowerTools we have taken the decision to support only Team Foundation Server 2010.

The team’s goal for the Team Foundation Server PowerTools 2010 Beta 2 release was to review the knowledge base of the previous version of the Best Practices Analyzer, port the rules that apply to Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2, add coverage for the new Lab Management feature, and add ten new rules. We also wanted to make sure that we kept our 100% documentation coverage for our rules.

As soon as we started coding, we faced our first challenge which was related to scouting the machines involved in the Team Foundation Server deployment. In order for the Best Practices Analyzer to validate the configuration of a Team Foundation Server deployment, the tool must identify all the machines that are part of the deployment along with the various components that are installed on each machine.

In the new implementation the Best Practices Analyzer is using the Team Foundation Server catalog to identify the machines that are part of the deployment. The catalog is a central point for managing and discovering all of the resources that make up a full Team Foundation Server deployment. The drawback of this approach is that in case the catalog is not available, the Best Practices Analyzer will report only one error message. For the RTM release we will be looking into extending the scouting mechanism.

We have made some minor changes in the user interface that I would like to call out:

  1. Scan type – the PowerTools 2010 Beta 2 release supports only the “Health Check” scan type. The team has decided to remove the “Install Check” scan type for the moment as we would like to better understand the value of running the Best Practices Analyzer on a machine before installing Team Foundation Server.
  2. Perform scan on – the PowerTools 2010 Beta 2 release does not perform any data collection and validation of the client components. For RTM we will investigate what client side data should be collected and validated.
  3. Team Foundation Server URL – I would like to explicitly call out for attention when entering the URL of the Team Foundation Server that you would like to scan. Please make sure that if Team Foundation Server is install in a virtual directory, you specify that in the URL (by default the Team Foundation Server website is installed in the “tfs” virtual directory). Do not include the Team Project Collection name in the URL. The tool has a built in mechanism to initialize the value of the URL however it has some flaws so please review the value before running the scan.

Closing the post I would like to write a little bit about the future of the Best Practices Analyzer. The PowerTools 2010 Beta 2 release of the Best Practices Analyzer represents a great foundation and we will spend the between now and the time Team Foundation Server 2010 will be released to expand the rule base of the tool. We have already partnered with Grant Holliday to incorporate his learning from supporting the internal VSTS Pioneer server. I am also very pleased that several members of the product unit have already reached out to us expressing interest in contributing to the Best Practices Analyzer.

Error “The Work Item History cube either does not exist or has not been processed” when opening a custom report

Team Foundation Server process templates come with a collection of reports however sometimes you might choose to develop your own custom reports. Recently I have worked on an issue where rendering a custom report would yield the following error message:

The Work Item History cube either does not exist or has not been processed

Rather than just stating the problem description and the solution to the problem, I have decided to walk you through the troubleshooting process as it might come in handy when troubleshooting problems with Team Foundation Server reports.

In order to narrow down the problem, first we have looked at the built-in reports that come with Team Foundation Server. The built-in reports were rendering without any errors and the data from the reports was up to date which meant that the warehouse synchronization was working as expected.

I have gotten a copy of the report in order to test it in my test environment. After configuring the custom data source that the report was using I was able to get the report to render without any errors. The problem was narrowed down even more to the custom report running in a specific development environment.

I wanted to take a closer look at the queries used by the custom report so I have created a SQL Profiler trace while rendering the report. The simplified MDX query returning the data displayed in the report was:

SELECT 
    NON EMPTY 
    { [Measures].[Cumulative Count] } ON COLUMNS, 
    NON EMPTY 
    { ([Date].[Year Month Date].[Month].ALLMEMBERS ) } ON ROWS 
FROM [Work Item History]

I have only basic understanding of MDX queries but the first thing that I have noticed was that the query was written against the [Work Item History] perspective and not against the [Team System] cube. The MSDN documentation of the Work Item History perspective contains the following note:

In order to use perspectives with the Team Foundation cube, you must use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (64) Edition on the data tier. SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition that ships as part of Team Foundation Server, does not support the use of perspectives. When you use SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, the cube elements from all perspectives reside in the Team System data cube.

As the documentation says, writing queries against perspectives works only with SQL Server Enterprise Edition. Using the information from this knowledge base article we were able to determine that the report was indeed running on SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.

The documentation also states that the cube elements from all perspectives are included in the Team System cube we have modified the query used by the custom report to:

SELECT 
    NON EMPTY 
    { [Measures].[Cumulative Count] } ON COLUMNS, 
    NON EMPTY 
    { ([Date].[Year Month Date].[Month].ALLMEMBERS ) } ON ROWS 
FROM [Team System]

In case you choose to create custom reports please make sure that you write queries against the [Team System] cube. By doing that, the custom reports will work both with SQL Server Standard and Enterprise editions.

The beginning…

I am not really sure where to start. I am a Team Foundation Server Escalation Engineer based in Budapest, Hungary. I will not bore you with details about what an Escalation Engineer does but if you really want to know you can read one of my colleague’s post.

Apart from helping enterprise customers with Team Foundation Server issues, I am part of the team developing the Team Foundation Server Best Practices Analyzer which ships as a part of the Team Foundation Server Power Tools. Please feel free to share any feedback that you have regarding the Best Practices Analyzer or the Power Tools.

In my spare time I am also contributing to the Team Foundation Server Administration Tool. I am very excited about this project as it has gotten some real traction now that it is community driven. In case you are using the tool, and would like to request a new feature, please let me know.

I have started blogging couple of weeks ago and I was posting on the Developer Support Team Foundation Server blog but I have a long list of ideas that I want to blog about so I decided to create my own playground.
