Laying down the gauntlet...GOOG v. MSFT

It's been a few years since I read Sun Tzu's the Art of War, but Google's announcement yesterday of an App Engine that scales using Google Infrastructure is nothing less than a full frontal assault at Microsoft's server business.

The attack on the desktop business is well underway with Google Docs, but this moves go at MS' bread and butter in terms of the corporate market.

A somewhat technical (9 min) video is below.

Now, the gloves are off....it's going to be fun to see how Ballmer and Co respond.

# re: Laying down the gauntlet...GOOG v. MSFT

Um - isn't this just web hosting on google's various web clusters?  I'm sure the back end allocation tools are pretty robust, but there's nothing here that you couldn't do with any other hosting provider other then the clustering, and most hosting groups offer clustering for a fee.

BTW - IIS 7's shared configurations would make this whole process trivial on IIS servers, and with SQL 2005's Clustering and Mirroring, you've got a robust database component.

Google talks about their stack - I would imagine that MS's "response" would be the IIS hosting tool kit that they've had out for *years*.
