Problem adding a virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005

If you try to remove a virtual machine from your master list and then attempt to re-add it, you will probably get this error:

"The virtual machine could not be added. The virtual machine configuration could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists."

If that happens, navigate to $\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and delete the VMC file you were trying to re-add. Now try adding the virtual machine again and it should work.

Now if anyone knows why Virtual Server places a copy of all added VMC files in the above directory, please let me know!

Hey Mohammed,

I had the same issue using the Windows VISTA.

So, the path to delete the shortcuts is:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines

Works fine!

A better way of expressing this location, which works both before and after vista is:

"%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines"

The correct path is "%allusersprofile%\Application data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines"
