Cingular Offering Free Extended Battery for the Samsung BlackJack
    by Ed Hardy -  2/26/2007

Not too long after Cingular Wireless begin selling the Samsung BlackJack, some users began to complain that this smartphone's battery life is too short.

Originally, this model came with two standard batteries. More recently, however, those who buy a BlackJack get one standard and one extended battery.

To make it up to those who got their device with only standard batteries, Cingular is now offering these customers a free extended battery. A cover designed for the later battery is also included.

Only those with IMEIs between 352794010030189 are 352794012269959 are eligible for this offer. An IMEI is a 15-digit number that can be found either on the packaging or behind the battery on the device.

To request this free battery, visit Cingular's web site.

    More About the BlackJack

The Samsung BlackJack is a slim Windows Mobile Smartphone with a built-in keyboard. It is currently available from Cingular Wireless and can access this carrier's 3G cellular-wireless network.

This is a GSM phone with support for the 2.5G standard EDGE. It also includes Bluetooth 2.0.

  • Can't stand the "User Account Control: Windows needs your permission to continue" dialog?

Annoyed with always getting that message? I was. If you want to get rid of that prompt, click on START, then RUN, and type in GPEDIT.MSC.  In the Group Policy Object Editor window, under Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, then Security Settings, then Local Policies, then Security Options. In the RIGHT pane, double-click on “User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode” and choose “Elevate without prompting” in the drop down list and then OK. That should be it! The system should now automatically use your admin username and not prompt you to “Continue”.

  • Problem adding a virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005

If you try to remove a virtual machine from your master list and then attempt to re-add it, you will probably get this error:

"The virtual machine could not be added. The virtual machine configuration could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists."

If that happens, navigate to $\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and delete the VMC file you were trying to re-add. Now try adding the virtual machine again and it should work.

Now if anyone knows why Virtual Server places a copy of all added VMC files in the above directory, please let me know!

  • Great Windows Media Player Tip: Play Speed -> FAST!

I haven't had the chance to write an introduction on who I am and how I ended up at Microsoft. I'll hopefully do that soon :)

But for now, I just wanted to share a GREAT tip that I got from someone when I first started here two months ago. It's probably not a big deal but I didn't realize I could do this. And that is when viewing the plethora of web casts and NEO (new employee orientation) videos, you can watch them on FAST! I don't know exactly how much faster it plays videos/sound clips but it's at least a third faster. Of course with it on "fast", sound will sound a little cartoonish, but I haven't encountered a clip that was played too fast and that I couldn't still understand everything that was being spoken.

Incase you don't know how to watch a clip on 'Fast', go up to the FILE menu in Windows Media Player and click PLAY -> PLAY SPEED  -> FAST. You, like me, will save so much time!

    Thanks, GW!

  • Good introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation

If you're looking for a good introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation, I highly recommend reading David Chappell's article 'Introducing Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation: An Early Look'. I thought the article does a good job of explaining what WWF is about and how it should be used. Nice work, David!

  • Error opening Visual Studio solution file: Make sure the application for the project type () is installed.

I was having trouble opening a web services solution. I kept getting the following error:

    ---------------------------
    Microsoft Visual Studio
    ---------------------------
The application for project 'http://localhost/B2BSupplierProcessPO' is not installed.

Make sure the application for the project type () is installed.
    ---------------------------
    OK   Help
    ---------------------------

Took me a while to figure out what was going on, but I finally found out why I'm getting this error. It was because I didn't have the 'Visual Web Developer' component installed (option to install this is in the Visual Studio setup process).  Installing that did the trick.

A similar error I believe happens for all other solution types. If you get this, check that you have the appropriate Visual Studio components installed...
