System Center 2.0 - Nominations for Pre-design reviews Now Open
One of the key tents of DSI (Dynamic Systems Initiative), is ‘Design for Operations’. One of the concepts we are applying in DSI, is the “Design for Manufacturability” movement that occurred in the manufacturing industry many years ago. Many of the lessons learned there apply to the software industry today. In the product development cycles for very expensive manufacturing equipment, studies have shown that only 8% of the total product budget has been spent by the time a product is designed, but those design decisions have locked in 80% of the cost of the product! The manufacturing industry learned from this and began to have production workers sit with the product design teams as they made design choices to ensure that they factor in manufacturing concerns, leading to a lower cost of producing and operating the equipment. Putting our money where our mouths are, Microsoft have started implementing the same concept – involving the customers that will use our management products in the design of our products BEFORE we have committed to completing design and commencing coding.
