marcus's Team System motivation and experience

This blog will share the experience I have made with team system. Besides that I want to communicate my motivation, that drives me talking about team system nearly every day.

Update on valuable blogs

From time-to-time I try to check which Team System blogs I regularly look at and I though sharing this with you might be pretty helpful:

A really great new "German" blog http://www.tfsblog.de/ was started by AIT AG one of our German Team System Quality Board partners and what I like about this one are the valuable articles they publish. They really put in additional value and share their experience.
If you speak German, be sure to visit their blog.

Another German alternative is Christians blog. Christian is a broadly known Team System expert and colleague of me here at Microsoft Germany: http://blogs.msdn.com/cbinder/

#1 blog is and stays Brian Harry: http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry , just in case you have not fell over it?

Additionally I want to point you to Stephanie's blog that still is pretty new:
http://blogs.msdn.com/stephaniesaad - Stephanie mainly focuses on future development, agile and distributed team topics.

Big value I also get from WIT Tools blog, they currently have a great series on internal Team System adoption at Microsoft: http://blogs.msdn.com/teams_wit_tools/

Not to forget Neno, a Team System MVP personal friend and Team System geek: http://msmvps.com/blogs/vstsblog/

A big bunch of other are out there and worth looking at. I will list a few more below:

Team System Trial VPC Downloads

I just saw that I never blogged the information that we have fully installed Team System VPCs available as TRIAL downloads. This is extremely helpful if you want to get a first look into Team System or play around a bit without the need to order hardware and install the whole Server product.

For TRIAL Download just look here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vsts2008/products/cc268311.aspx

And for the ones already looking for the next release, a VPC with the Rosario Community Technology Preview can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vsts2008/bb725993.aspx

TeamConf 2008: A Team System success story

I wrote quite a lot about TeamConf 2008 beforehand but got lost in workload after the conference, not finding the time for writing a review.

The first "Team System Only" Conference world wide was a great success.
We had over 250 attendees and 97% of all attendees gave us the feedback, that they will will recommend TeamConf to others.

We had 3 fantastic days, starting off with practical half and full day workshops, one of the workshops even went till 8:30 pm (scheduled till 6 pm). In the workshops attendees had the chance to really hear practical experience around the Team System space....

The following 2 days where stuffed with great sessions and especially the customer sessions where highly rated. We had > 10 user-sessions from live VSTS customers sharing their experience and success stories. This was a tremendous benefit to the conference. Additionally Ivar and Sam had great keynotes that rounded of the conference program.

One point not to miss: Everyone really enjoyed the networking possibilities. We had a good platform for formal and informal talks in the "finger food" dinner area. This was one of the most important pieces of the conference, besides content and really made a difference according to othe revents I have been.

RIMG0005

To sum up: We will have a TeamConf 2009. Be sure to save the date 5.-7. May 2009 in Munich.

And we look forward to see even more attendees, customer success stories and networking possibilities there.

If you are interested, you can have a look to the session content on the TeamConf website.

Stay tuned for an update: We recorded a bunch of sessions, that we will make available on Channel9 the next weeks. I will promote this on my blog.

Besides, according to my blog title: Events like this are pure "Team System Motivation"

Where should Team Documents be stored?

I really hear this question quite often and the answer is not easy: If you use Team Portal you are able to profit from all SharePoint Collaboration possibilities, but you don't get Versioning/Labeling with the related Source Code. If you store Documents in  Versioncontrol, all NON Developer Roles, not having Team Explorer installed, can't work on them. Both solutions don't really satisfy :-(

Sometimes good solutions are so near. With the TFS Migration Toolkit we deliver a reference implementations for syncing data between TFS and WSS. This makes it possible to use best of both worlds and lets you just synch Team Portal Docs into Versioncontrol. Just have a try!

Many thanks to Klaus Liebe from Zühlke for this tip.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 VPC now available

We have waited long for it but now a fully installed VPC is available for public download:

This virtual machine is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, SP2. It contains a full installation of Team Foundation Server 2008, Team Build 2008, Team Explorer 2008, Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite and all necessary prerequisites. In addition, it has been updated with Office 2007 SP1, current Windows Updates as of March 25, 2008, and the December Release of the TFS Power Tools. Team Foundation Server is installed in workgroup authentication mode and thus does not require a domain controller.

This release also contains 38 hands-on labs and sample data. Please examine C:\MSLabs inside the VPC image. If you desire, you can download the hands-on labs and their support files only. See the MSI download link below.
Please note: future updates to this image will be provided in the form of Virtual PC Differencing Drives. You may find it convenient to keep a copy of this download unmodified for these future updates so that you do not need to re-download this base image.

To learn more about this release, please visit the Visual Studio Team System 2008 home page.

Plan language decision for TFS installation very carefully

Hearing this from customers a bunch of times now I want to point out, that you should carefully decide if you really want to use a localized TFS Version.
There is NO supported WAY to change the chosen TFS language after you have created Team Projects. (Before you can for sure uninstall and reinstall). Microsoft does not support changing TFS languages in any way!

If you e.g. install a German TFS and want to use the SCRUM Project Template you are already in trouble. SCRUM as well as most others 3rd Party process templates do not support a German TFS.

If you are not sure, put yourself on the safe side and install an English TFS.

To be clear: This is different for Team Suite and all other Client products here you can change language by simply uninstalling the old and installing the new language version, if you have a valid licence :-)

Tremendous Team System interest at the Launch 2008

Today is the third day of the German Launch of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 in Frankfurt. I am more then just a bit excited: We had 6.000+ attendees at the Launch and additional 1.500 at the parallel SharePoint Conference.

Heroes Happen Here:

All Team System sessions and we had 5 Team System only ones, where crowded. The rooms where full and we had rooms for 600+ people! We had great feedback and super interesting discussions on all kinds of Team System topics. The Ask the experts booth for Team System was really overrun during most breaks. For me this was one of these events where you really feel proud to belong to the Team System family and this motivates for every minute I invest in Team System.
