Announcing the WebCam Vista Sidebar Gadget

I wanted some more proof that my .NET Sidebar Gadget Creator works so I started a new .NET based UserControl from scratch. Guess what, it does work. After I wrote the code for the WebCamControl in .NET, I fired up the .NET Sidebar Gadget Creator, went through the wizard to create the gadget files and it worked the 1st time in the Sidebar. It literally took me about 1 minute to get it up and running (not counting the code for the actual WebCam stuff).

Here's a screenshot:

Here's a link to download the gadget:

Please note that this has only been tested locally on my machine using a LifeCam VX-6000. Your webcam may or may not work. If it does, let me know. If it doesn't...I guess let me know that too :-)

One thing I noticed is that if you have another application using the camera, it won't work. DirectShow only seems to like it when 1 application uses it and will return errors when another application (e.g. the gadget) tries to stream the camera data. Is that the case with you possible?

Mark, No other application looked like usign my web cam at that moment, however I reset my computer, try again and now is working like a charm.

Could you send me or publish the code for the web cam stuff?,

Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much. Great contribution.

Hello Mark,

thanks for this great gadget, it works absolutely fabulous with my Logitech QuickCam Express.

I wrote a Webcam gadget once as well, but mine could only handle "external sources" as it consists of only HTML and JavaScript. I got many requests for an additional source: a local webcam.

So my question to you is: how would you feel about it if I add your gadget-functionality into my gadget? I will ofcourse mention clearly that local-functionalities are written by you.

Hope to hear from you.

Best regards,

Robin Paardekam

Hello!

The gadget works on my cheap-bum Vimicro USB cam, BUT there i cannot find a handle to move or close the gadget. It's not that i dislike the gadget itself, but i'd need to flip the picture not to have the people in it hanging with their feet from the roof, and for that i need the camera control, which won't open since the camera is streaming to the gadget...

Apart from that little detail, thanks for your proof-of-concept!
