Girl Geek Dinners - Coming Soon to an Ireland near You

ggdinnerlogoSince I moved from Seattle to Dublin about four months ago, I have kept an eye on this site: http://girlgeekdinners.com/   These types of events hold a special place in my heart, as it's no secret that women are often under-represented at tech events.  So I'd like to help bring Girl Geek Dinners to Ireland.  I have been doing some stealthy recruitment and working with the organizers, and I think we're finally ready to give it a shot.

What does a Girl Geek Dinner involve?

It's an informal event for women to get together and talk.  Dinners generally have either a speaker for a general topic or several people talking for shorter periods of time.  It's a great way to get some exposure for your technology, meet some fantastic people, get experience speaking in front of groups, and of course enjoy some great food and drinks with fellow Girl Geeks.

Um, exactly how geeky do I need to be to qualify...?

Good news - you don't have to be an extremely nerdy assembly language software developer to attend!  Any woman who thinks technology is cool and interesting is welcome to attend, as discussion topics end up being all over the place.  So the more diverse the attendee list, the better.  And hey, if you *are* that assembly developer, you should come along, too!

When are we talking?

The first dinner will be mid January in Dublin.  I am looking for suggestions as to the night (Sunday? Mid-week? Weekend?) so that we can accommodate as many women as possible who are interested.  I have a website going up shortly, but I am terrible at design, so if anyone wants to help out or has suggestions (please lets not use pink...), I would be delighted!

If you have fellow girl geeks who you think would be interested, please let them know or send me their names.  And of course if you have any other questions, feedback, thoughts, etc., please e-mail me at martharo [at] microsoft.com and let me know.  I'm really looking forward to getting this kicked off!

What about dudes in drag who've made an effort to get a realistic looking wig and shave their legs?

Hi Ken,

Um, yeah sure why not...  I mean, that's an awful lot of trouble to go to, but if it's worth it for you, go for it!

I'm totally up for this.  Weekends always suit me better than mid-week.  I'll blog it once you have a date fixed.

You might wish to post about your event on www.Irishbusinesswomen.com which is a forum with over 1,500 members. IBW is a very diverse community - it even has some men among its membership - but all are interested in business in one way or another. I would hesitate to call any of our members geeks - but, call them what you will, some of them might be interested!

Best wishes with the event.

Nice one Martha.  Sounds like a great idea.  My suggestion re. what night is not to do a Wednesday night- there are already 2 or 3 networking things on in this town on a Wed.  But any other night would I'm sure be super.
