Troubleshooting Max install errors
If you encounter an error when attempting to start or install Max, we recommend the following steps.
First, confirm that you're running the latest version of Max. Here's how:
- Start Max.
- Click About in the lower left corner of the homepage.
If you’re running version 1.0.60831.0, do the following:
- Exit any programs that are running, including Max.
- Start the WinFX Uninstall tool (see instructions below).
- Start Max and it will detect and install the required version of the Microsoft .NET Framework.
If you couldn’t install or launch Max, or you’re running a version earlier than 1.0.60831.0, do the following:
- Exit any programs that are running, including Max.
- Start the WinFX Uninstall tool (see instructions below).
- Install Max from our website.
Using the WinFX Uninstall Tool Unfortunately, using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall the WinFX Runtime Components might uninstall only portions of the WinFX Runtime Components and the Microsoft .NET Framework previous beta versions. If you’re experiencing problems upgrading to the latest version of Max and need to uninstall WinFX Runtime Components, we suggest trying the WinFX Uninstall Tool.
Please be aware that this tool will remove any pre-release versions of Visual Studio 2005, the .NET Framework 2.0, and WinFX Runtime Components. If you need to use these programs, they will no longer be available after you run the tool. And if any other programs depend on these programs, they might not function properly after you run the tool.
To download the uninstall tool:
- Download the WinFX Runtime Components Uninstall Tool.
- When you are asked if you want to run or save the file named vs_uninst_winfx.exe, click Save, and then choose a location on your computer where you want to save the file.
To run the uninstall tool:
- Go to the folder where you saved the downloaded file, and then double-click vs_uninst_winfx.exe.
- Follow the instructions to install the tool.
Note: Once you finish uninstalling WinFX, run Max again to install the required version.
