What happens when I share?

Seems like an impressive product. Excellent to create lists with ease. However, forgive me if I haven't quite understood Max, but I presume it publishes pictures to share with friends. Can I view a demo of these published pictures outside of the microsoftmax menu options to check these are ok? If so, I am very confused how this is supposed to be achieved? In a nutshell, I want to know how friends/colleagues will actually access the shared photos and how these will be presented to them. Once this is revealed to me I will be able to educate others and any type of resistance will be negligable.

This totally makes no sense...so I can email pictures around? When I clicked Other People's Lists I totally expected to see "Other People's Lists" out there in the cloud.

Hi Mark, hmm, Scott, and Shady,

Thanks so much for the feedback.

When you add e-mail addresses to the Max sharing page, you're basically giving access rights to people. When you publish the list, you're saving those access rights to our server.

When a recipient signs in to Max and clicks Other People’s Lists, they will see your list, accept it, and start to download it from your computer.

We are working on ways to make sharing easier in the future, stay tuned! :)

But I think if the MAX should send notfication email to the recipient address to alert him that there is new album is around and he/she need to grab the new MAX
This could help to promote the new app. fastly.

Actually, this little app is pretty cool - I've noticed a few people pronounce it as lame but it's a pretty good demo of the new winfx stuff - something I've been looking for (source code anyone?). Very quick and easy to put together slideshows without actualy moving images into folders. We're about to use this tonight at a large presentation - we'll have the Mantle view running some app screenshots in the background.

I would like to see the ability to edit and search for photos.. edit directly back to the original file (unlike picasso). It's also very hard to search for photos.. please add this functionality.

Non-Windows Support?

I've not had the chance to try the application yet but I am wondering how friends and family that are not running Windows XP or Vista are expected to be able to view your pictures. While the application is clearly using some of the new features of Windows (WinFX cited), it's not much use if you cannot share your pictures with everyone in the same way that you can using services like Flickr.

Are you planning to provide support or methods for which OS X, Linux or even Windows Mobile/Palm users can view pictures? Without this kind of support you just cannot "share" with everyone so you might as well use a service that does allow for it.

This reminds me a lot of Picasa 2 without the video playback features, editing features (are they in there because I didn't see them) but with a few features that Slide offers.

By no means cutting edge and not going to ever replace Picasa 2, but still pretty nifty.

Hi Gaz,

You must stay signed in for your friends to download your lists. If you're signed out, they'll see that your list exists, but they won't be able to download the photos.

Tip: If you sign in and close Max, it will minimize itself to the taskbar and allow your friends to continue downloading your lists.

It'd be really nice if there was a way to export the albums for non-Max friends.

I like open-software and it'd be refreshing to allow people to create with Max, but let them share freely without making it so proprietary.

While I like what I see (especially the Mantle view - even though it crops some pics), Max appears to be trying to be Microsoft's answer to Picasa. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more features.

Simple interface I could see catching on to the photo enthusiast who's not necessarily file management savvy. Nice interface.

I'm sure its coming later but it would be nice to see more layouts... or some more options to mix up templates, add text, maybe more theme type scrap book type designs - clip art options... chose transition effects... but at the end of the day if I can't just catch the layout from anywhere on the internet -from any machine - I'm totally limited to how I want share. It's a start but without distributing to everyone easily - without major install - to just catch it at a public location... work/school/grandparents... what's the point? The target of interest is too small.

One complaint I have is that when you go to send an invitation to a friend the box where you can type a message only holds a limited amount of characters. Kind of hard to say hi, explain what the program is, give directions to install, and then explain how to add me to their shared list in 50 words or less!

As said before it would be cool to have a choice to publish a list so that everyone (not just friends) could see it if they were signed on.

In order for others to see my list they have to download MAX. Kinda stupid. Now what if they don't want to do so. There should be a way to share without having to add 50mb of stuff just to see a pic.

Expecting other people to download MAX to see someone's pictures is absurd. It took forever on my PC and I have broadband. Pity those with dial-up.

It's a good demo of the FX technology but totally and utterly impracticle. Typical Microsoft, they produce something 75% great and 25% lame.

Shame.

Nice design; clean and simple. I love the drag-n-drop arranging you can do in the mantel/editing view. I added a list and allowed someone to download it (obviously, someone that had to install it as well). Nice work. And - it doesn’t appear to clutter up my folders with those nasty Picasa.ini files you get with Picasa.

Keep up the good work. It looks to be a great 1.0 product when it’s done.

<rant>A pet peeve I have is some of the post people here that complain that MS has done it again with creating a program that is "75% great - 25% lame". Dude. It's beta. And it's free. They have stated over and over again that it is a work in progress. Please post constructive criticism if you are going to spend the time to post at all. </rant>

Well the fact that MS is going to be doing better with graphics is a nice feeling. Many other programs and interfaces do graphics well now.

The fact that they gave us a teaser with MAX is awesome dont beat them up just tell them what you'd like to see in this prog if it were a true release. I like the thoughts some had of if I am not XP and and WINFX what do I do to see the lists.. Well in the day and age of XML RSS and HTML I think that MAX could be made to have a second interface that is compatible but give them time, and remember this is a Windows XP Vista WINFX technology so dont get your underwear in a bunch cause it wont support your cousins free RedHat Linux.

I personally think we are on the virge of some greatness out of MS and I do appreciate the teams efforts to showcase the technology in front of critics.

I'm reminded of that Dilbert strip where he's the first person in the city to get a new video phone. He sat next to it, to Dogbert's amusement, waiting for somebody to call him. Hang in there guys, it will happen sooner or later.

Frankly, I think this is a great idea. Registering a domain and creating your own website to share photos with friends and family is something I've done, but is way beyond the average punter.

Any possibility or plans for a stand-alone, i.e., burn and mail executable? I live in an area constricted by a lot of dial-up. The interface and product is great (especially mantle view) but if I can't burn a presentation for friends, across town (countryside) or on the DVD player in the living room, its not much use, and I'm not even going to recommend it to freinds with broadband for quite some time just in case of possible internet/security related issues to come.

I don't want to be too critical at this point but the long history with MS puts us in bias "mode"--I see the same 75%/25% mentality/restrictions apparent at this point; dual side installations, complementary program requirements, error this, error that. I want to call up the friend, say, did you get the DVD(CD)? Answer, Yup. Retort, good! Then, latter, when all conditions are perfect on all sides at all times, we'll do it your way.

I'd like to see MAX respect the fact that some of my images have dimensions that are quite small and varied, thus displaying them at their original sizes.

When using the Mantle or Album view this should also be taken into account and have Max place the images cleverly side by side without cutting out too much of each image.

Of course if the images are larger then the screen or viewing area it makes sense for MAX to size them down but not UP or at least not automatically up. Increasing the dimensions of the pics trashes the quality so it would be nice to either have more control over each pic or have MAX do some creative layouts without resorting to resizing.

I would also like to be able to export each slide in the Mantle or Album view, once I'm happy with each arrangement. A copyright or watermarking feature would also be great to throw on top of each slide once exported.

Personaly I think its an interesting program with many possibilities and I look forward to the finished version but untill then I'll stick to Thumbs Plus 7 and even Picassa from time to time.

As for publisher - sounds to big and clunky to me. As for the viewer - there definitly should be a possibility to view the photos using just a browser. You don't expect every person in the world to download and install 50 mb to just being able to see the published photos, do you?

Very cool! We just relocated cross-country and I've been struggling with the best way to keep our kids' grandparents up to speed with photos, etc. Here's what I like:

*We don't have to create/maintain a web site
*No 3rd-party storage of our photos (or IP, for you corporate types).
*Passport sign-in required which provides an adequate level of access-control.
*Related: Only the people who receive the list are allowed to see our photos.
*We don't have to spend time uploading everything so that our interested parties could pull down a single image.

Great benefits - looking forward to RTM.

Product feedback:

*Would love to see a list of next-version features published in your blog
*In addition to photo lists, I want to create lists of recipients so that I don't have to type their addresses each time.
*Messenger integration would be great
*Would love to see some statistics on my lists - were they viewed (and by which contact), were they downloaded, etc. Shouldn't be a privacy issue since the only people allowed to view are people I've granted access to.
