Insider's view of multi-language MSDN Library and Localized Visual Studio 2010 Product documentation.
Not too chubby not too skinny (stay in good shape)

Time flies!! September is almost there while I am working on a serious diet for actually both MSDN and TechNet. Gaining some weight is so easy but losing a little chunk of fat is so tough. And there's no exception for that. My cat is on a diet too and I myself need more exercise. I am not going to talk about my cat or my own diet plan but talk about MSDN. About a month ago MSDN (both English and Japanese version) were 2 chubby babies because of lots of new contents. They must fit in 3 CDs and in 1 DVD but they were spanning to 4 disks. The size of 4th disk was about 90 MB. There's no low carb diet for MSDN and also no 20/20 diet program for it. And think about the 90 MB. How many pages in there if 50 KB per page. Over 1800 pages of information. It's quite a lot, isn't it? I was in trouble about a moth ago. To put MSDN on a diet I asked our customer in my Japanese Blog (http://blogs.users.gr.jp/michiko :Not too chubby not too skinny (stay in good shape)) if you have to give up some contents what contents do you think you can let go from MSDN CDs. (By the way Japanese MSDN contains Japanese and English contents (except English KB). English MSDN has only English contents. )

Options are...
  (A) want to keep old Japanese contents even though giving up new English contents.
  (B) No, we need English new contents since localized contents always come later.
  (C) we don't need English new contents. If you want it go to MSDN Online Library

Option B got most vote and option A also got some votes.
One of comments says keeping old contents is helpful to see changes in APIs, function, method, property etc. You might have experienced that the property value you used to use in old system is no longer supported in new system or something like that. So developer might want to check when or since when it's changed in MSDN. That's totally understandable but sorry some of old documents are gone from CDs. The good thing is you can still get old information from MSDN Online Library site...

As you commented in your column, I choose option B as Japanese. You said “Not too chubby not too skinny” but either way, the things we must concern is its quality of Contents, right?(I'm sure you have ponderd over it well!!) For me, I’m developing the database system so this information gives me little bit disappointment if you cut down the information of all SQL7.0’s or some related information.
You know, Going to the Web and reserch then back to my sorce is kind of pain for me especially when I concentrate on the code.
Anyways, very glad to find your site today and I want to let you know that I belong to Mr. ShowG’s community (LCS, RTC). Now your site is in my bookmark so look forward to see your next column.
P.S. Will you come to the event “TechED 2004” in Yokohama?

Thanks for your feedback and email, Sam Kitabata-san. And I'm sorry to disappoint you and SQL users who needed those documents. The SQL 7.0 docs I removed from October release are Prodcut docs which came with SQL 7.0 so I believe if you have SQL 7.0 you have full set of those docs in your machine. I didn't cut whole SQL 7.0 stuff. You can still see more than 500 article with keyword "SQL Server 7.0" in October release. I'm quite sure that cutting all SQL 7.0 off from MSDN is more difficult than my cat's diet : ) So please don't be too disappointed. We still have SQL 7.0 stuff there.
