Demo Tip: Cleaning your desktop

So how often have you done a presentation and your desktop has dozens and dozens of documents, shortcuts, etc… My desktop looks like a train wreck hit it on most given days. I use my desktop as a dumping ground for things I should work with or look at. (Since if I put any documents in My Documents, they tend to go into a black hole that they will never come out of.)

So this trick was shown to me by NS Rana and Lisa Ruff. So here is my desktop normally:

To make your desktop clean:

  1. Go to a clear area on your desktop.
  2. Right Click
  3. Select “Arrange Icon by”
  4. Select “Show Desktop Icons”
  5. Follow the Same Steps to show the Icon again after your demo is over.

Now your desktop will be clean. It will look like this:

Great way to make your machine look professional. Don’t be alarmed if the hiding time takes a few minutes. (Especially if you have hundreds of files on your desktop.)

Enjoy!

I tend not to have a background to allow my machine to at least act a little faster... :-)

# A few minutes?!?!

How many million icons do you have on your desktop for Hide Desktop Icons to take a few minutes? Or do you have a very very old machine?

Actually for me it is size... I have a bunch of ISO's and Product installation files I store on the dekstop while working on VPC's... And a few minutes is a big long... It is probably a minute or less.... But if you read the blog, you will know I have a bad case of ADD and anything more than 2 seconds seems like an hour to me...

Now you need such a tool for cleaning the task-area from all those quick-launch icons and tray icons, too :-).

Ben, I've been doing this for a while now. And I use the 'disk cleanup' app to blow away the stuff I never use. I also have a killer picture of my twin couf saxophones that is always a conversation starter. A CRM pic, done well, could be interesting too.
