Mike Polson's WebLog

A day without Metadata is like a day without Sunshine

My First Post!

Hello !

My name is Mike Polson.  I'm a Program Manager here @ Microsoft working in the Windows Digital Media Division.  My colleagues in the division develop the ultra-cool:

  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Media Encoder
  • Windows Media Services (server)
  • Windows Media Center Edition
  • Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition
    • PhotoStory
    • Sync'N Go
  • Windows Movie Maker

I use and Love all these products.  Most are available as free downloads!

Ok-- so what do I actually do?

I design systems and databases for providing Metadata Services for Windows Media Player.

What's a Metadata Service?

Well, metadata is “data about data”.  We provide several metadata services.  Our most popular service in terms of usage is CD metadata.

Hopefully, you've noticed that when you insert a CD into Windows Media Player, it displays the album name, artist name, and all your track (song) titles.   In addition, you may see a pretty picture of the actual CD jacket.

Although it may appear too, that “metadata“ doesn't actually reside on your CD.  Instead, it is provided via our online service.  If you computer is connected to the internet, when you insert a CD into Windows Media Player for the first time, it will query our database.  If we have a match for your CD, we will send you fresh and shiny metadata.

Our goal is that this service “just works“ -- so how are we doing?

mike, i think Windows Media Player has come a long way in the last few years, so keep up the great work! I confess to also using winamp as well though. i think it still has the jump on WMP in some areas. the metadata services in WMP are awesome though.
I've got a "wishlist" of things I'd like to see in WMP, and at the top of the list is a way to better integrate WMP with my portable media devices (primarily my Creative Nomad Zen at the moment). When I am sitting at work, I would love to use the WMP interface to play songs stored on my Zen (5000+ tracks). any chance that will be coming soon?

Mike,

I switched to Windows Media Player from MusicMatch (winamp before that but got tired of the UI) for my main MP3 player about 6 months ago, and I'm very happy with it overall. I've never had any complaints about the metadata (from either WMP or musicmatch). My favorite feature of WMP is the auto playlists (similar to outlook 2003's search folders). Incredibly useful. I love the fresh tracks, 4 and 5 star rated ones the best.

And since you mentioned photo story, I just wanted to say: I downloaded Photo Story for the first time earlier this week (based on John Porcaro's recommendation - http://johnporcaro.typepad.com/blog/2004/01/fun_with_photo_.html), and I am *soooo* thrilled with it. The UI is incredibly simple, it is so quick, it supports MP3 for audio, and the end result is amazing, it's such an innovative product.
