A day without Metadata is like a day without Sunshine

Unknown Album, Unknown Artist???

Ever insert a CD into Windows Media Player, only to see it display Unknown Album, Unknown Artist, Track 1, Track 2, Track 3, etc?  This happens when metadata information is not available for the CD.  However, this situation can be corrected.

How?  You ask.

Easy.  In Windows Media Player, just click the Now Playing tab, look for the playlist on the right side.  Here you will see a picture of a CD.  Notice the Find Album Info link below it.

Click this link and you will be presented with a wizard that will allow to quickly key in your album information.  “Unknown Album” will be replaced with the correct album title.  Pretty cool!

Please note that if you are connected to the internet, that this information is update to Microsoft for sharely with others that have the same CD. This is also very handy for musicians/artist who are producing their own music, as it allows them to add their information to the world wide CD DB.

Useful though this metadata facility is, I have found for nearly every CD I own that I have had to enter at least some of the details myself - maybe existing data is more complete for current music and popular genres.

Here's a few questions on submitting album/track data myself:

* Who checks submissions (if anyone)? Is Microsoft involved or is it all dealt with by third parties?

* Why isn't it possible to submit details on some missing or incorrect info - for example, record label?

* When submitting Genres it appears I am restricted to the items in the list - which isn't always adequate. But I notice that others seem to have submitted entries for Genres which are not in the list. How?

* One particular difficulty seems to be items being entered for Genres which DO exist, but in other languages (eg Classique for Classical). Couldn't Genre codes exist which have different language equivalents?

* On occasion CDs I own have had data returned in Japanese, for which I don't have language support, so have no idea if it is correct. I have sumitted new English language data - is this correct?
